Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Beta 2
PROS: Major functional improvements; componentized, roles-based design
CONS: Requires x64 hardware and OS
RECOMMENDATION: Microsoft Exchange 2007's x64 hardware and OS requirements are sure to alienate customers, but the product itself is in great shape. Exchange 2007 Beta 2 offers a modular, secure design; amazing scripting and management capabilities; and the expected integration with the next-generation Outlook client. Deployment issues aside, Exchange 2007 looks to be a worthy and credible upgrade.

Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2
PROS: Integrated patch updating service; better licensing; lower price; bigger mailboxes
CONS: Still complex to install; many small businesses will need support from a Microsoft partner
RECOMMENDATION: Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 is the finest version of this product yet. It's a tremendous value, thanks to Green Check technologies, integration of Update Services, mailbox enhancements to Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), and the new Client Access Licensing (CAL) rights. The CAL rights will make adding a second server less costly for small businesses. Whether you intend to manage the server in-house, or work with one of Microsoft's partners, Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 is a winner.
