PROS: Huge refinements to Office UI
CONS: Some applications still retain outdated UI
RECOMMENDATIONS: Thanks to its innovative new UI—at least for Microsoft

Windows Vista Release Candidate 1
PROS: Vastly improved software and hardware compatibility; simplified
UAC
CONS: In x64 mode, many applications fail or won't install at all
RECOMMENDATIONS: Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is the final
prerelease version to be offered to the general public. Vista RC1 is better
than the lackluster Beta 2 release, with improved software and hardware compatibility
(at least in the 32-bit versions), a less-annoying version of User Account Control
(UAC), better performance, and other improvements. It's still prerelease code,
however, and users with x64 aspirations will be disappointed. But overall, Vista
RC1 is in good shape—a positive omen that Microsoft will meet its end-of-2006
deadlines for the final version.
