DNS Client Hang
A problem in the code that manages DNS name-resolution requests occasionally returns an invalid pointer instead of either a valid address or a "not found" message. When this problem occurs on a client machine, the system hangs. Many Win2K services initiate DNS name-resolution requests, so the fix for this problem is comprehensive. It contains new versions of 22 system files, including core components such as the Local Security Authority (LSA), Kerberos, the SAM, DNS, and even the Win32 Time service. You must call Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) to obtain this fix. For more information, see Microsoft article Q311309.

Microsoft Releases Windows 2000 COM+ 18.1
Microsoft released COM+ 18.1 on January 14. Like service packs and security rollups, COM+ releases include updates from all previous versions. This release corrects a problem that creates COM+ objects after you restart the COM+ object and includes a patch that eliminates an access violation that occurs when you access an embedded object in the Class_Terminate event of another component. See Microsoft article Q312618 for the complete list of updates that COM+ 18.1 includes. The rollup isn't available for public download, so you must call Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) to get it.

COM+ 18.1 doesn't include a code fix for a recently discovered problem that involves the COM+ hosting component. If you encounter an access violation in dllhost.exe when you run the Control Panel Add/Remove Windows Components applet, you must call PSS for a separate update. Microsoft article Q304218 documents three workarounds that temporarily address the dllhost failure.

Two More Desktop Shortcuts
Because many readers wrote to say that they liked the shortcut I described last week, I'll share two more. You can use the command

%systemroot%\system32\logoff.exe

to create a shortcut on your desktop that lets you log off a Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services system with one mouse click. This shortcut works only on Win2K Server systems on which Terminal Services is configured and running. To create a desktop shortcut that starts Task Manager, use the command

%systemroot%\system32\taskmgr.exe

If you have other favorites, pass them my way and I’ll include them in a future column.

Nice to see someone taking onboard the fact that there is a growing number of multiprocessor servers out there - but don't forget NT !!

I've got 2 NT4 SP6a domain controllers (one running NT4 & Exchange 5.5, the other running SBS 4.5)on totally separate customer sites. Both are rebooting randomly, 2-3 times a week, with the following STOP bugcheck error (never varies) :

0x0000000A (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The only thing they have in common is dual PIII processors (one pair @ 700MHz and the other pair @ 1GHz)and software mirrored SCSI drives.

Technet refers to a similar error saying that the problem is caused by timing errors between the CPUs e.g. when writing to mirrored disks. But no fix. Any ideas ?
