Microsoft has shipped the technology preview of its highly scalable data warehouse appliance, currently code-named "Madison." Madison stems from Microsoft’s acquisition of DATAllegro’s massively parallel processing (MPP) data warehouse architecture. Madison integrates with SQL Server 2008 data warehouses and works with industry standard hardware. It offers organizations the opportunity to scale their databases to up to a petabyte of data.
According to the Data Platform Insider blog, ten Microsoft customers have already begun testing Madison. "Participants are loading data at rates of 1 TB per hour and processing query executions at over 1.5 TB per minute," says the Data Platform Insider.
This Madison technology preview is available to only a limited number of people because testers must meet specific installation criteria. This has been a busy month for Microsoft’s SQL Server team. In addition to Madison, the company has released the Community Technology Previews (CTPs) of SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Azure Database, and SQL Server StreamInsight.
