SQL Server Tools Return Different Results

When I use different SQL Server tools to return statistics information about an event, I sometimes receive widely varying results. Why write the query this way with a sub-select statement? I rewrote it with INNER JOINs without the sub-select and got the same results. Which form is more efficient?
