Hiding the My Documents Folder Icon

Windows IT Pro
InstantDoc ID #39654

I set the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Advanced\Folder\MyDocsOnDesktop registry subkey's DefaultValue value (of type REG_DWORD) to hex0xf0500174 on a Windows 2000 system so that the machine will never display the My Documents folder icon when a new user logs on. However, the registry setting doesn't seem to work. The Show My Documents on the Desktop check box (on the View tab of the Folder Options dialog box) is cleared, so that setting can't be the problem. How can I prevent the My Documents folder icon from appearing whenever a new user logs on to the Win2K system?

You're editing the wrong registry subkey and value. The setting you mention (hex0xf0500174) is correct, but you need to set it for the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CLSID{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\ShellFolder registry subkey's Attributes value.
