SQL Server 2008 Certification Exam Prep Kits

SQL Server Pro
InstantDoc ID #102151

In a blog post on www.windowsitpro.com titled "What Certification Training is Right for You?", I outlined the three avenues of achieving certification: in-person training (courses and boot camps), hosted solutions (virtual professor), and self study. I suppose you could add "winging it" as number four.

In a tough economy comes the dichotomous dilemma: we want and need more training to stay relevant and competitive, but your organization doesn't want to pay for it and you can't afford it! Keeping a pulse on the industry and reading industry publications are good ways to keep informed for little or no money, but it's also nice to get training where there's visible proof on a resume. That is one of the compelling reasons for certification.

For most database administrators, the most important area for certification is SQL Server 2008. Syngress is offering two prep kits on SQL Server 2008: one on Database Implementation and Maintenance (Exam 70-432) and one on Database Design (Exam 70-433). Both prep kits are $59.95 and includes lecture, a test engine, podcasts, and PowerPoint for exam-day review.

Both of the exams mentioned are MCTS (Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist) exams, which are the first level exams in Microsoft's new certification hierarchy. If you've been certified under a previous version of SQL Server under the old hierarchy, you may not need to pass these exams in order to take the second level, MCITP (Microsoft Certified IT Professional) exams. The whole thing is confusing to say the least, so you'll probably want to contact the Microsoft certification experts to find out about what is required given your specific situation. (Note: many thanks to a reader for setting me straight on this one.)

aid50md, thanks for contributing to the conversation. I'm sorry to hear the materials were such a disappointment.

I don't have any specific books or kits to recommend, but you might consider searching SQL Server 2008 or MCTS on Amazon.com. There seems to be quite a variety and plenty of reader reviews.

This is a review of The Real MCTS SQL Server 2008

    " 1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor quality, July 9, 2009
By Belter (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
I am now at Chapter 4. I started of with being disappointed with the print errors but this is just a poor quality book. There was clearly no QA. Example is pages 150-151: Exercise 4.8 gives you the exercise but the steps were left out. You can find the solution in books-online but you really have to know what you are doing to find it. On the same page, is a section titled "The SQL Server Configuration Manager" where you are reminded that Surface Area Configuration tool is replaced by Configuration Manager and it sort of describes how to get to facets. This is inaccurate. To get to facets, you start from the *Management Studio*. I am amazed at the poor quality. I sure hope I can still pass the test."

Any other suggestions for Study Guides.
    Thnx

cfrandall, you're absolutely right. Very sorry for the misinformation on that. When I previously met with some people in certification, I was told that MCITP is the level 1 (kind of like MCP but specific to the topic area) and that MCTS is the level 2. It sounds like those two must've been flipped either in their words or in my head.

Anyway, thanks again for the heads up. Looks like I need a prep kit. :)

Some misinformation in this article: Exams 70-432 and 70-433 are the technical specialist exams (MCTS), and MCTS precedes MCITPro on the certification path for SQL Server 2008.

The MCTS exams are prerequisites for the MCITP certification, not the other way around.
