Getting Smart About Cloud Computinghttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/cloud-computing2/getting-smart-about-cloud-computing#commentsAnchorFri, 29 Oct 2010 16:06:02 GMT
Interesting article on the cloud. At Skytap, we think cloud automation can change the way enterprises utilize scalable, efficient cloud computing resources. Companies need a self-service Web UI, enterprise grade security and policy control, and the flexibility to be used for different types of workloads such as test/dev, training or sales demos. Survey Confirms Past Year Hard on IT Budgetshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/it-pro-perspective/survey-confirms-past-year-hard-on-it-budgets#commentsAnchorMon, 20 Sep 2010 16:10:04 GMT
Full disclosure: I work for a vendor in the cloud storage space.

Messaging and collaboration are definitely key high-growth applications and given the way people prefer to search rather than file/manage/delete content, we at StorSimple expect that the amount of retained data will only increase going forward, and that retention will be at rates greater than annual growth rates seen traditionally in storage. Cloud storage services provide customers a unique opportunity to meet retention and storage goals for these applications while also keeping costs down. Such services coupled with cloud storage gateway or on-ramp devices (like StorSimple) can also be used to further reduce costs (both in storage and transfer) while also providing primary storage performance (tiering) and simplifying data protection by eliminating tape for certain applications and workloads (Cloud Clones).

Cheers,
Joel

Securing Data Wherever Users Roamhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/news2/securing-data-wherever-users-roam#commentsAnchorWed, 10 Feb 2010 13:26:36 GMT
Microsoft presented Unified Access Gateway (UAG) 2010 to us last year and during the talk my lights went on. The presenter was not very fluent, but I could see the cloud technology being ported to on premises resources. The presentation showed the possibility of securing ERP, CRM and BI resources without the heavy lifting that has be implemented by perimeter devices and their user requirements. Thanks for showcasing this technology. Curt Spanburgh. Microsoft Dynamics CRM MVP]]>

In Pursuit of the Practical IT Prohttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows-7/in-pursuit-of-the-practical-it-pro#commentsAnchorFri, 29 Jan 2010 14:11:58 GMT
I seriously doubt there was a major change in the "approach with the development of Windows 7". Vista was a debacle and Microsoft moved quickly to put it behind them. Consequently, Windows 7 is just Vista with some minor changes and a new name. In the same January 2010 issue where this article appears, the "Windows XP to Windows 7" article lists in big red letters "Windows 7 is essentially the next release of Vista". In the “Windows 7 Under the Hood” article you refer to, Paul Thurrott states “from the perspective of people who have to manage and support the systems. It’s sort of a minor release because it’s the same technology, essentially”. Mark Russinovich avoided classifying it as a major or minor release. I suspect he couldn’t seriously call it major release, and didn’t want to call it a minor one. We’re sticking with XP as long as we can. It does what we need it to do. That is our practical and economical IT solution.]]>

The Virtualization Stakeshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/virtualization/the-virtualization-stakes#commentsAnchorThu, 28 Jan 2010 10:40:10 GMT
The comment re small business use of virtualization is amusing. I guess that’s okay if you’re running postage stamp-licking applications and someone is on 24/7 standby to get things back up and running again.]]>

To Deploy or Not To Deployhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/news2/to-deploy-or-not-to-deploy#commentsAnchorFri, 20 Nov 2009 15:30:08 GMT
I suspect a lot of companies will follow the "phase-in" approach as described here. It would be very interesting to hear from other IT pros to hear how their deployment plans match up.]]>
