We just evaluated Mimecast. We weren't interested in their full blown solution with archiving, we looked at their basic security option and then possibly adding continuity. It looked like a really good service, probably the best I evaluated. But they're expensive. They had some unique features that we did not need, so we could not justify the price. But I would still highly recommend checking them out, they might be a better fit for your organization.]]>

I just wonder why SQL Server magazine forgot to mentions the tool YourSqlDba script. It was reviewed once by SQL Mag because is was a runner-up in SQL Magazine 2007 Innovations Award. It was also was reviewed in another column http://www.sqlmag.com/article/sql-server-2005/yoursqldba. This script install a small database with code and stored proc. and tables that support one main stored procedure that is able to do the four legs of maintenance: integrity checks, update stats, index reorganize and backups. One procedure must be called initially to generate 2 simple SQL Agent jobs to runs daily maintenance, and log backups. From there it automates a solution that is just perfect for small to mid-size instances. If your requirements are higher (near half a terabyte), you can use theses jobs as a template to split work across scedules, and databases. Even a junior DBA can handle this. This tool offer also a set of stand alone stored procedures for database maintenance that integrate log shipping into normal backups (full and log). There is a lot of tools and the list still grows. Most of all, there is a real logging of maintenance and errors and by default e-mail and alerts. The tools is constantly improved because it serves as a the maintenance standard for the customer base of Society Grics, the sponsor, and from the feedback and support of our users. Our customers' DBA find their life much easier since then and the tools proved to be very reliable across the years. It was introduced in 2007 and was improved constantly since. The home of YoursqlDba is at www.grics.qc.ca/yoursqldba. The script is contained in a html help file (a link on the main documentation page), but we will eventually move to a wiki format.]]>

Tweet-SQL Lets You Update Your Twitter Account Using T-SQLhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/tsql3/tweet-sql-lets-you-update-your-twitter-account-using-t-sql#commentsAnchorThu, 26 Mar 2009 18:32:28 GMT
Megan, Michelle here -- I’m just now getting my head wrapped around some good business uses for Twitter, but Tweet-SQL is leaving me utterly confused. Why would I want to modify my profile from SQL Server Management Studio? How can I use Tweet-SQL in order to better leverage the possibilities of Twitter? I’ve checked out the links in your story, but it’s all code or how-to; what I want is some info on "why do I care?" What’s the value proposition of Tweet-SQL? BTW, I’m now tweeting as SQLinTheCloud -- there is a Cloud in your future!]]>

Hi Marcos, Thanks so much for your feedback! We will keep this information in mind when we are planning and scheduling business intelligence content for future issues of SQL Server Magazine. If you’re looking for more information about the ETL process, I recommend reading "Build a Simple ETL System with SSIS" at http://www.sqlmag.com/Article/ArticleID/93114/Build_a_Simple_ETL_System_with_SSIS.html. Another great resource is Rodney Landrum’s article "SQL Server Integration Services" at http://www.sqlmag.com/Article/ArticleID/95385/sql_server_95385.html. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can point you to any more of our content. Megan Keller Associate Editor, SQL Server Magazine megan.keller@penton.com]]>

Nice case, I like the overview offered. It would be nice to detail this implementation in next issues. I specially like to know more about the ETL process, what happen to the data that are not imported to DW? Wouldn’t it cause a distortion in the analisys? Thanks.]]>

Motivating Women in the SQL Server Communityhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/news2/motivating-women-in-the-sql-server-community#commentsAnchorFri, 28 Sep 2007 09:12:51 GMT
In my 20 years in the IT field, I have only once felt that my gender was ever an issue, and that was in being evaluated for upper executive level IT management. It wasn’t from the IT group that the difficulties originated. I personally think that inside the IT department, ability means more than anything else. We are all so interdependent. Where issues arise are in the top executive levels of IT. Upper managments still have difficulty accepting women as candidates there, usually for family demand reasons. I will work as long as it takes to get things done. I always work at home after hours, but I do leave to handle taking kids to acting class or band or whatever activity they are involved in. In my current position, I will never be considered a real candidate in that fashion because they think I don’t have the dedication to do what is needed, when really, I just don’t have a wife to do all the familial dutues for me. They still me to the meetings to ask me to explain the reports that I compile for the CIO.]]>

BoxTone's Unique Approach to BlackBerry Monitoring and Managementhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/blackberry/boxtone-s-unique-approach-to-blackberry-monitoring-and-management#commentsAnchorTue, 13 Mar 2007 15:19:41 GMT
I was so pleased to see this article about Boxtone that I had to stop and write a comment. We use Boxtone to manage our BlackBerry community. At present, we have about 2500 BlackBerry devices deployed and only have three people supporting them all. Boxtone has enabled us to keep an eye on our entire BlackBerry infrastructure and know about issues before our users do. We were tired of getting phone calls from our Executives stating they had not received messages on their devices the last hour or half hour, etc. Since the software available through RIM would not provide us the type of results we desperately needed, our CIO pressed us hard to find some kind of utility that would provide real time notifications of issues so we would know about them before our users (especially the Execs) did. Boxtone was recommended to us by both RIM and our primary Carrier, and they were greatly superior to all other alert tools we considered. Of course, Boxtone does not prevent issues from happening - we still have to deal with continuous issues from RIM, our infrastructure and the carriers, but because Boxtone is able to pinpoint where issues are most likely occurring, we are able to resolve them much faster than before. Its ability to provide alert notification of potential issues is a godsend - I can breath easier knowing there is a resource keeping a watchful eye for me so I no longer have to be tied to the BES. Our BlackBerry devices have become a critical part of our company, and Boxtone allows us to keep everything running smoothly. I would say something like, "I don’t know how we got along without it," but the truth is, we weren’t getting along at all until we started using Boxtone.]]>
