Windows Update Critical Updates; Unsynchronized Computer Account Prevents Logonhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/passwords/windows-update-critical-updates-unsynchronized-computer-account-prevents-logon#commentsAnchorFri, 02 Sep 2011 17:03:49 GMT
You'll likely not have the privileges as the user to disjoin from the domain (send the workstation to workgroup) or to rejoin it. You need local Admin privileges to send it to the workgroup and domain admin to rejoin the domain. Also, you'll need privileges in AD to reset the computer account of the workstation (which I found usually works to allow it to rejoin), or delete/re-create it or just delete it - it'll self-create when it's rejoined as long as you don't have a policy that restricts this (one where it needs an account to join to, first, before AD will let it in). I found you usually have to do something to the computer account in AD because it obviously got corrupted if it couldn't be found with no network/IP/DNS error - the article left that part out. You'll figure out I'm right when you can't rejoin the domain, then you either reset/delete/re-create the computer account, and then can rejoin the domain after a reboot of the workstation to pick up the new AD change (cmd line: "gpupdate /force" might work, too).]]>

A COMEDY OF ERRORS Paula, I tried to email you to pass on some tips and suggestions regarding new developments on this issue. Is it possible that your corporate email system is misconfigured, so that people who use Symantec products cannot send you email??? It’s a good thing you have this feedback form! :) Can you post here when the issue is resolved? Thanks.]]>

The best way to troubleshoot is by using the logs. Turn on all the accounting you can, then watch. I was able to find a fix for the spool problem by noticing the access rights violations to the spool directory. One of the applied templates removed everyone access to the directory, but I started receiving the 7031 error message described above. By altering the rights on the spool directory, I was able to fix the problem. I normally ghost the system, turn on every auditable event, mark all directories for audit (denied access), and watch. When the solution is found, revert to the original image to save all the work of unrapping.]]>

Hi, i see lots of complaints regarding WIN XP SP2, i have installed and upgraded over 50 systems with sp2 and have not had most of the problems mentioned here, i think the only issue is that some drivers for printers etc might need updating, this is the part of the hardware manufacturer to post a updated driver at their site, also, make sure that the system is clean/virus free/ before the install, SP2 has worked brillently so far! at least for me, systems uograded range from old pentium 3 500’s to the new p4 3ghz, no problems!]]>

Of course, no one seems to have an answer to these SP2 crashes...I have yet to see a real solution. For such an "ugrade" MS claims SP2 is, you’d think they’d see what this crash vulnerablility on many XP (NOT ALL - you "I never had a problem" condescending jackasses) SP2 units have an get on it. Then again, it’s MS...unless it’s for sale, they could care less. ]]>

I have installed XP SP2 on 4 dell machines and it randomly crashes all of them. They are lucky if they last 24 hours without crashing. I have tested this by flattening one and installing XP SP1 with all updates (except SP2). This had no problems and didn’t crash for the week that i left it running for. I then upgraded to SP2 and within 24 hours it crashed. When the pcs crash everything freezes but there seems to be a lot of network traffic coming from them. I know it’s not spyware or viruses as the one that i flattened was off the network and couldn’t have been infected, and also the others all have up to date anti-virus and anti-spyware on them. I’ve tried everything i can think of and have looked for solutions on the web but now have to go to Microsoft to see if they have any solutions.....]]>

I dont know if this is of any help to anyone having problems with sp2 ..but, i have found if you take your original xp disc(with or without sp1) copy it onto your hard drive into a folder. Then download a full version of sp2(from memory about the 250mb size) place that into a seperate folder. Slipstream (merge the two together) create a boot up disc encorporating the merged files. If possible format and install onto a now cleaned computer. Failing that upgrade from the disc(making sure virus checked and any spyware removed)...both have worked for me on different computers. I’m currently in the office over the weekend trying to do a test migration from an old NT PDC to a new server running SBS 2003. Have just done all the Windows 2000 / 2003 MCSA training but still finding myself getting confused by what SBS can and cannot do as it doesn’t seem to support mixed mode (running NT4 DCs) at all, although Windows 2003 does. Found this article and everyone’s comments very useful in helping me go to "Plan B" - thanks !]]>

Just want to know if anyone has had this experience. I installed SP2 and rebooted the computer. On reboot, all I got was a black screen with a cursor. No start menu, no icons, nothing. Tried to reboot again in safe mode, last good boot, and still got the black screen. I ended up having to reformat the computer and reinstall Windows. This happened to 3 different computers. I finally was able to get SP2 installed on one of the computers but i installed it on a fresh install of Windows XP. The computer seems to be doing fine. So i think i’ve figured out how to fix SP2. Just install it 4 times, since it seems to work 25% of the time. NUTS!]]>

This person and the author are confused.. Symantec updates def live and hourly from the central admin console which in turn spreads to all the clients on the LAN. For the people that are remote workers or laptops users that travel..again from the central admin console you can tell these clients to automatically launch live update and get new defs from symantec directly if not conected to your own lan. To do any other way is just incredibly stupid Thank You, for your article. I have to address the person who stated "...WHY SECURITY FAILS..."; it is actually quite the opposite. Not having these definitions ’live’ is most of the reason I have had worms and trojans on my work WAN. On top of this, I have to work around the admin issue once again to get rid of it. Due to my companies "HelpLESS" desk (seems outsourced), never can fix the problem and I have to wait until my local IT handles the problem. This is not rocket science! Control freaks maybe ?? The article would have made a bit more sense if the author had indicated this was about upgrading Win2k SERVER to 2k3SBS. SBS is a good product, but it’s not the magic bullet a lot of people seem to think it is. The worst thing you can do is ignore the SMALL in its name... Exchange is a real resource hog and for anything more than the smallest businesses, it really needs to be installed all by itself or on a server that does very little else. SBS also doesn’t play nice with software that uses any 16-bit components. We’d all like to think the entire business software industry is well past that phase, but it isn’t yet reality. Best advice: if you truly fit the SMALL description, and you don’t intend to do anything more than use what’s provided with SBS and maybe an AV package, then SBS might be for you. If you’re pushing the limits of the definition of small business, or if you’re going to be running some sort of customized software, make sure you research this product well before you buy it, including contacting your software vendors for compatibility information. Low day one costs mean nothing if you’re constantly getting headaches from the implementation.]]>

Some sadly misinformed comments apparent here. The first anonymous poster obviously has NO idea about how SBS fits into the market. It’s a killer product and the sales figures alone show that. Don’t forget the global community of SBS fans that exists to provide support to one another. The author of the article itself appears to lose sight of the target market for this product too - how many small businesses have hundreds of gigabytes of data to backup?? Another upgrade/migration strategy is available from www.sbsmigration.com. I’ve used this process multiple times and it works very well. The best recommendation I can give anyone looking to implement this product though is to get a suitably experienced consultant in to install it - it will work much better, will cost you less and you’ll sleep much better. Can’t find a consultant? Check the Microsoft site for SBS user groups around the world or look for an SBS-MVP near you who can point you in the right direction. There is a wealth of information around the place about SBS and how to make it do what your business needs. It’s not for home users with Windows 2000 - so the commenter with a problem with this can relax. This is SMALL BUSINESS SERVER, not HOME server!! I’m not a Microsoft employee - just a user of SBS2003 and now a fan.]]>

The poster that stated "no other DC’s are allowed in this domain" is sadly misinformed. SBS must hold all the FSMO roles but works very well with additional DC’s in the same domain. There can be no other SBS servers in the same domain and you cannot establish a trust with another domain. If you have other sites with their own DC’s that trust each other you are probably no longer a small business (what did you think SMALL Business Server meant, anyway?)]]>

I have setup 2 SBS2003 servers from scratch for companies that have abbout 15-20 employees and its great I have my MCSE so I am not one who knows nothing about IT and though I know some people who have got to a place where they needed to learn SBS2003 on the job with very minimal IT experiance it was very easy for them. I would suggest this to anyone who has a small business.]]>

Unless you’re a really small business running only 1 win2k server to take care of all of your needs, SBS 2003 might be the option for you but I would steer clear of this product. You must setup SBS 2003 as a domain controller, if you don’t, it’s a violation of the eula and the server will power itself down after 7 days and every day afterwards. If you have other servers at your site and possibly other sites with other domain controllers, SBS 2003 won’t play nicely with them. It’s a domain controller of a different flavor, no other DC’s are allowed in this domain, it’s a like a single tree in a single forest (why do you call it a forest if there’s only 1 tree?). Also, aside from it’s packaging indicating that this is an easy product to install & maintain for the non-IT person, real world experience indicates that this is most definitely not the case. If you can stick with Win2K server if that’s what you’re currently running for as long as you can. It’s a rock solid server product without all of the headaches & XP’ish eye candy that SBS2003 brings to the table. If you plan on going with SBS2003, plan on increasing the amount of time you spend at your workplace by the amount of time you’ll be reducing your sleeptime by. IMHO, 2 thumbs down for SBS2003! ’nuff said.]]>

Understanding Application Problems in Windows XP SP2http://www.sqlmag.com/article/firewalls3/understanding-application-problems-in-windows-xp-sp2#commentsAnchorSun, 20 Feb 2005 19:38:40 GMT
I would recommend turning off the XP-SP2 firewall and see if IE works. Since SP2 now does application level filtering on the firewall. It is quite possible you have accidentally put on an application filter on IE. That would explain why Netscape works. Because perhaps that ISNT filtered? Anyway, in reply to "Don’t like articles that send me to other articles." I would agree. I would say this article was deficient in any real useful information. Most of it is fairly obvious from reading a few articles already. I was hoping for something more substancial.]]>

SP2 Took me 6 hours to download and install. After which I lost the use of my internet browser. Had to disable automatic updates to fix that problem. Now my computer runs to slow to do anything that it could do before. Leave it to Microsoft to turn my laptop into a typwriter. Had to use other computers to seek help and info on this problem. Seems to be pretty common.]]>

Great article. I have been dealing with this DNS problem for a while now. I handle some 40 Windows 2003 SBS for different clients and out of those only 2 experience this problem. Although Microsoft doesn’t allow the public download of the fix, at least Microsoft says something about it instead of hiding it and making us IT guys go elsewhere for clues.]]>

I have an old DELL XP450 - installed XP2 last Fall - took several tries (had to drop zonealarm) but it’s working ok. Just tried to install SP2 last night on a new DELL Inspiron 1000 Notebook with SP1. Now I can’t: (1) Get anything to work off Start, like Control Panel, Windows Explorer. I get an abending DRWATSON, and the machine freezes. (2) I got IE working, but when it won’t let me permanently change home page or Favorites list. Oh, it accepts the changes, but after a reboot, they’ve gone back to prior settings. (3) Nothing in the System Tray. I’ve seen all these problems in previous postings here - wish I’d read them before I tried SP2. I’m going to cross my fingers and uninstall SP2 tonight. If that works, I’m going to switch to Firefox.]]>
