Hi Tyler,

Nice article! Cannot believe it was posted on the same day as I am looking for the ways to backup / restore OLAP SQL Server 2008 DB.

Do you by chance know how to move the OLAP cube to another server and specifically how to do that for TFS (Team Foundation Server) ?

Thanks in advance,
Yelena Varshal]]>

Optimizing Time-Based Calculations in SSAShttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/sql-server-analysis-services/optimizing-time-based-calculations-in-ssas-#commentsAnchorTue, 04 May 2010 15:18:02 GMT
very useful article. its a bit clearer than David Shroyer’s original white paper which I found glossed over a couple of key steps. I had to work back from his examples to get it working on my cube. My big issue is I couldn’t figure out how to get this working on the different time dimensions we use. We are a healthcare company so we have admit date, discharge date, bill date etc... and different audiences use different time dimensions. I ended up with several versions of my cube each with just one time dimension so I could implement YoY, YTD, RollingYear etc...

But this is still much neater than the built in time intelligence in SSAS2008

Many thanks

Steve]]>

Great article! In my testing, I’ve found that in the SSAS cube browser, the time calculations correctly show the format (currency, etc) of the associated measure; however, Excel 2003 and 2007 do not show the right format. Is there a trick to this, or is it just a limitation of Excel?]]>

Using Reporting Services in an Internet/Extranet Environmenthttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/internet/using-reporting-services-in-an-internet-extranet-environment#commentsAnchorMon, 15 Sep 2008 16:34:30 GMT
Great article. Had a problem that others might come across, for which there are large volumes of info on the web-- when in fact my solution was rather simple. With the Forms Authentication Sample implemented, including Tyler’s fixed VB file, BIDS could not Deploy my work to the server. While SSMS seemed fine with the forms authenticated user, BIDS did not seem to work with the new extension at all. It would over and over again prompt for "User name" and "password" in a Reporting Services Login box, yet it would not accept any valid credentials. Many many hours down the tube. Solution for me was to develop, and run Deploy, of my Report Model from BIDS on a SQL Server 2008 CTP installation on a different server. Worked on the first try. Tested from another 2005 box, does indeed appear that 2008 client tools was the fix. Hope it works for others as well.]]>

Comments from the author: Hello. In the article I walk through 2 “phases” – phase 1 involves Installing the Sample Security Extension that ships with SQL Server 2005. After (and only after – because there are quite a few steps/config settings/etc. that can trip you up) you have this sample extension installed and working properly, you are ready to move to phase 2 – the “Second Sample”. The actual security extension of the second sample is a complete standalone project (CustomSecurity.vbproj) and can be found in the RS_External_Code\Sample2 - IntegratedApp\FormsAuthentication directory. The web site example of the second sample is called RSFormsAuthSample – and as you pointed out, there are no associated project or solution files. This is because I have this configured as a web project to ensure the IIS (and not the VS 2005 built-in Web Server) is used. You will need to configure the RS_External_Code\Sample2 - IntegratedApp\RSFormsAuthSample folder as an virtual directory within IIS, and then open the “project” using the File-Open-Web Site menu item within VS 2005. In the Open Web Site dialog box, make sure you have selected “Local IIS” (and not File System), and then select the RS_External_Code\Sample2 - IntegratedApp\RSFormsAuthSample folder. Assuming you’ve configured this folder properly in IIS, it should open up in VS 2005 – and you’ll be ready to go. Tyler]]>

This is good article, however, it didn’t show the step by step of how to install the sample project, and besides, cannot there is no project attached to the RSFormsAuthSample download, it only has the aspx and aspx.bv files. So, a bit loss of how to implement this sample code for testing/viewing.]]>

SQL Server 2005 Express and Workgroup: Scaled Back, Yet Feature-Richhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/sql-server-2005/sql-server-2005-express-and-workgroup-scaled-back-yet-feature-rich#commentsAnchorMon, 07 Nov 2005 14:22:37 GMT
We are currently using SQL Server 2000 to replicate to 500 users. These users have MSDE loaded on their PC’s and are using pull subscriptions. Since replication uses the SQL Server Agent, we will not be able to upgrade our users databases to SQL Server 2005 Express. We also would not want to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Workgroup because of the additional expense. Since one of Microsofts replication examples is replicating to a large sales force that is not connected all the time, how will they address this? Also, how will you be able to setup maintence on MSDE or schedule tasks? Will your application need to do these tasks? This seems very inefficiant. This will probably delay our upgrade to SQL Server 2005.]]>
