This would be great if the download wasn't corrupt. Also calling this MS support line is useless. They do not know what 'troubleshooting' is. Reboot router, argue about router model number vs. a router Hardware sn, say I am the only one in the world with the problem, restart every computer and internet device, anything but troubleshoot the cab file on their side. 3 networks, 3 computers and the same corrupt file. I really loved the MS Flight Simulator of the past and had eagerly awaited the install after the several part downloading mechanism with a cab file name a mile long. No way Winzip stopped at the same place after each download, morning and evening...hope this is not a sign of xbox support or pc live marketplace support of the future.]]>

Hi have found in hotels that some large screen tvs use a special remote control to hook in to the hotels systems. I can plug in HDMI from my laptop, but the remote does not switch to any other HDMI. It may be that you have to locate the manual source/volume buttons on the TV itself, effectively not using the supplied remote control. Plug in HDMI from your laptop (you did bring a cable did not you?) and select the correct hdml device using manual buttons. You can then use HDMI as an extended screen on your laptop. Have fun!]]>

Robert beat me to the punch. The author jumped right to reducing space without determining how the space was allocated. I pre-size my databases and expect a great deal of unused space at the begining of the life cycle of a database. Slowly, over time, that space will be allocated to data. That could have very well been the case here. There were also flaws with the methodology of truncating and shrinking the transaction log without performing the backup. I cringed when I saw the phrase "we don't actually want to do a backup...".]]>

This is because you have problems in Windows Registry. It is a common cause of Windows crashes and error messages. Registry problems can occur for many reasons, including references left behind after uninstalling, incorrect removal of software, missing or corrupt hardware drivers or orphaned start-up programs. This will significantly increase the Registry size and slow down your computer, because Windows will need more time to load, search, and read data from the Registry. Scan your system for errors with Digeus Registry Cleaner http://www.digeus.com/products/regcleaner/registry-cleaner.html]]>

You can chain these out. For example: DIR *.log >NUL && ECHO Logs Found || ECHO No logs here. is basically an if-then-else on one line Even more fun, you can group commands with parenthesis: DIR *.log > NUL && (ECHO Logs Found & Del *.log) || (Echo No logs here & EXIT) Of course, one could get carried away and make hideously complex single line commands that would completely obfuscate the intent, but I leave that as an exercise for the reader... ;->]]>

Locking Down Applications in a VDI and Session-Based Virtualization Worldhttp://www.sqlmag.com/sponsoredblog/the-benefits-of-application-whitelisting-and-software-restriction-policies-53/security/locking-applications-vdi-sessionbased-virtualization-world-141563#commentsAnchorFri, 30 Dec 2011 04:25:08 GMT
It's true that there are different approaches to facilitating remote access to applications. The fact is that Terminal Server has advantages over VDI, while VDI also has advantages over Terminal Server. That's why most organizations are best served by adopting a hybrid approach, with an optimal mix of Terminal Server (for task-oriented users), VDI (for power users), and Blade PCs (stock traders, graphic designers, etc.) which delivers the most benefit and platform flexibility to the organization. Organizations will need solutions to manage users as well as control the applications they can access regardless of the access technology. Ericom Software's PowerTerm WebConnect facilitates this hybrid approach by managing access to Terminal Server, VDI and Blade PCs with one management tool. WebConnect also allows IT staff to control the applications that users can access by presenting them with a list of permissible applications or virtual desktops based on their login credentials. Given the number of websites that cater to multitude of browsers on the Internet the suggestion to lock into one browser be it Internet Explorer or Firefox etc. may hold good in most cases. While the point of standardization on browser in a corporate environment is taken, however, in the event that a user happens to have a genuine need to use any of the other browser/browsers as the case may be, using techniques like application whitelisting and software restriction policies would make it difficult to switch between browsers...]]>

You raise some interesting points, John, particularly in terminal services environments where the actions of one user / application can have a significant impact on others. Application control and whitelisting technology can really help strike a balance the need to keep a secure and stable shared server and the need for reasonable user productivity. Plus, as a side benefit, IT shops may also find that application control will reduce licensing costs on shared environments. With an uncontrolled server, most applications need to be licensed for every theoretical user. In many cases, this unnecessary licensing exposure can be reduced by demonstrating that access is limited with an application control technology. Another key consideration is whether a performance management technology can further stabilize a shared terminal server by throttling any one application's ability to dominate memory and disk usage on the shared box. This will also increase user density on the terminal server, potentially providing an immediate ROI on the application and performance management technology. Doug Lane Disclosure: I work for AppSense, which offers application and performance management software.]]>

You can do a quick and dirty ARP scan using nmap. Just run the following command "nmap -sn -PR 192.168.1.0/24". You'll need to substitute the proper CIDR notation for the network you wish to scan (I used "192.168.1.0/24" as an example), and you don't need the quotes, which I included for clarity. Run nmap from an elevated command prompt for best results. Also, please note that ARP packets don't traverse routers, so you'll only see the local segment (broadcast domain) of your network using this method. If your network is split across multiple subnets, then you'll need to run this separately on each subnet.]]>

Hi John, Thanks for your article. I'm having trouble with the final step in this process. 3. Finally, apply the policy to users: Get-CSADUser -OU "CN=Users,DC=savilltech,DC=net" | Grant-CsClientPolicy -PolicyName ForceADPictures I launched the Lync Server Management Shell and updated the command in step 3 to reflect my specific domain as "domain.local", but I think the problem is that my users are not in the default "Users" OU in AD. Also, I've broken out my AD into sites (such as NY, CA, etc.) so I have multiple "Users" OU's (1 "User" OU under each site). The error I get is: Get-CsAdUser : Management object not found for identity "CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,CN=New_York,CN=Sites,DC=domain,DC=local". I'm curious if (1) you can assist with the problem I'm having, and (2) if we get this working, will I need to apply the command to every sub "Users" OU I have in my AD? Thanks, Rob]]>

Adding users to the local admin group is often necessary to gain certain functionality, such as the ability to install some software packages, ActiveX or use some built in Windows actions. This is just a heads-up: I made time to try this this weekend and it BSODd my Win7 32bit workstation. Fortunately I didnt have to restore from a disk image. Windows Repair ran after the first reboot, but that failed. Safemode boot failed after that. Then I was able to recover via another Startup Repair bootup and selecting a Restore Point. After I recovered, I googled xbootmr BSOD and found that this unfortunately a common scenario. Under those circumstances, before attempting this exercise, make a disk image, a restore point and have a Win 7 Repair Disk on hand. Note that Repair will choose the most recent Restore Point made by the OS, and not your manually made Restore Point. That means you may have to manually apply your manual restore point after you get back into Windows. For me, the first test caused BSOD on ntkrnlpa.exe and ntfs.sys On a second test run it was Nvidia's nvlddmkm.sys . Sort of random. I've contacted John and he is now aware of the issue. Bret A. For me, the first test caused BSOD on ntkrnlpa.exe and ntfs.sys On a second test run it was Nvidia's nvlddmkm.sys . Sort of random. I've contacted John and he is now aware of the issue. Bret A. Q: How can I use the Windows Performance Toolkit to trace the startup performance of my machine?http://www.sqlmag.com/article/client-management/windows-performance-toolkit-trace-startup-performance-machine-139479#commentsAnchorMon, 19 Sep 2011 13:08:30 GMT
Bret A. John, for this case also, simple commands are enough instead of cryptic VB scripts. To terminate a process you can use Taskkill command. For example, the following command terminates winword.exe: taskkill /im winword.exe Again, the command is less than half of the line. ]]>

John, most of the times ordinary commands are sufficient to do something meaningful. In the above case the following command would do it: tasklist /fi "imagename eq windword.exe" this command scans the running processes and tries to find out a process whose name is winword.exe. if it finds, the information about it is displayed. If not, a message saying that such process is not found. A single line (in fact, less than half line) is equal to 12 lines of VB code. ]]>

"DPM can't use storage that has to be connected to via a UNC path or mapped drive." You can attached a VHD via UNC and DPM will regard that drive as local storage. So while DPM itself, from the management console can not use UNC storage, with one extra step you can get there. It's easy to get DPM to use remote storage. Simply create a VHD anywhere you want. Then use Disk Manager to attached that VHD. So if you do not want to deal with the garbage that is iSCSI then there is your UNC alternative. We run DPM in a VM and in order to keep the VM small and manageable we only use remote VHD's which actually aren't remote at all, they are on the same host but this way the VM itself is not TBs in size when exported once in a while for safe keeping.]]>

Q. I'm looking at rolling out Windows 7. Are there some third party programs that were needed with Windows XP but aren't with Windows 7?http://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows-7/im-rolling-windows-7-party-programs-needed-windows-xp-arent-windows-7-139659#commentsAnchorMon, 11 Jul 2011 10:08:49 GMT
I agree the Windows 7 built-in defrag utility is improved. As you point out, it depends on the level of functionality you require as to whether or not a third-party defrag program is needed. It is pretty much universally accepted that for enterprise deployments, a third-party defrag is required. Similarly, as organizations move to virtualization, a virtual-aware defrag utility is required to ensure the best performance of virtual guests while minimizing resource contention. Outside of the enterprise, features such as real-time fragmentation prevention, complete file defrag, free space consolidation, and other flexible and scheduling options provide capabillities fara above Windows built-in offering. PerfectDisk from Raxco Software (www.raxco.com) provides such capablities. Joe Abusamra Raxco Software]]>
