So I read how you enable it in the "remote" tab in system properties on the target PC. Then, if you go back to your PC, there is a file in windows\system32 called mstsc.exe... run that. You logon using the username and pw of the one already running on the target PC. What I didn’t know is that they must have a password i.e. not blank! This delayed me for days till I finally read it on the internet. Also, not sure if it’s necessary to enable file sharing and I also checked the "Remote Desktop" box under windows firewall - advanced - settings (top one). FYI, you can access XP from a Vista PC but you cannot access a Vista PC supposedly. Par for the course... Vista sucks!]]>

I got Remote Desktop Connection working just fine. My problem is the state that the remote computer is in after the host computer disconnects. Even if the remote computer has a user running, and the remote session logs in as that user, after disconnect the remote computer wants somebody to log back in. "Type the name of the host system in the Computer text box, then click Connect." This only works if you are already on the same LAN or virtual LAN right? I suppose before connecting via RDC the user needs to establish a VPN connection to the same network that the remote pc is on? Or do you mean that the full IP address of the remote pc should be entered as the name?]]>

Hi, I have a laptop with XP Pro SP3 which I use at home to connect to my office desktop(also XP Pro SP3) remotely via VPN. Is there anyway to speed up loading of files particularly pdf? It loads line by line literally. I already played around with all the RDP options except "unchecking" all option on the Experience. Slooow. Funny thing is internet pages loads kinda fast when I’m browsing via remote host. Any idea why pdf loads slooow?]]>

I recently upgraded my persona firewall on my host system. After finally getting the connection to work, I’m now running into an issue that’s similar yet different from the other logoff issues presented in this thread. My problem is that, when I try to end the session by clicking on Start then Disconnect, I’m presented with the normal "Do you really want to end the session... " box. And, after clicking the Disconnect button, the system just sits there and does not disconnect. The only way I can disconnect is by moving my cursor to the top of the page and, when the disappearing banner bar drops down, clicking on tht X in the upper right corner. Why? Has anyone else had this happen? If so, how did you fix it? Thanks, Clem Patafio]]>

S Jay/voriuka/barneybear/kftgr/gmanvbva, I’ve had the same issues. The issue lies in deffective or incompatible video card drivers. It happens to both nvidia and ati cards (in my case, an ati). The solution I found is to reset the video card driver using utilities such as riva tuner (works for both nvidia and ati: in the main tab, target adapter, click the small right-off button and choose reset display driver) or ati tray tools (works for ati, haven’t checked for nvidia). RDP login should work fine after that. This is a rather ugly workaround as you’d have to do it before phisically leaving the pc. I am leaving UltraVNC on and remote connect through it just to reset the display driver and then to be able to login with RDP. A better solution is to revert to older drivers but this may be impractical for some configs. Maybe this helps someone still ...]]>

When returning (physically) to a workstation that has been logged in and out of an XP to XP remote destop session, the screen is blue and pc does not respond. I would expect to see a windows log in prompt. The pc then has to be logged back into, with rdp session, and rebooted. Only other way to reuse the machine is a hardware reset. Does anyone know of a reason why these sessions arn’t loggin out properly?]]>

for Barry Hillen and "L": If you don’t want the expense of Static IP addressing, check your home PC Dynamic IP address before connecting with RD. Use RUN, CMD and enter IPCONFIG /ALL at the prompt. Press enter and the Dynamic should appear. If you are using a router between your ISP and your PC, you will need to check for the Dynamic IP provided to the router. I use LINKSYS, with a default IP of 192.168.1.1. After entering ID and Password, click on the Status tab at the far right of the opening screen. Scroll down to see the address being provided. This check must be made before each attempt to connect, since your Dynamic IP may have been released and another one assigned by your ISP. Or, just pay the big bucks and get the Static IP.]]>

Problem: Remote computer kicks me out when trying to login. Case 1: When I go physically to remote computer and login and leave the sessions open( not log out ), come to my computer and try logging in to the remote compute, I can login and on the remote computer the session is logged out (meaning goes in some backgroud or so...). If from my computer I disconnect the session ( not logout ), then I am able to log back using RDP. There is no prolem here when there is a disconnect and the session is active on remote computer or when there is a live session active on remote computer. The actual problem is here ... Case 2 : On the remote computer all the sessions are logged out, there are no active sessions. I try to login from my computer to this remote computeer, I see the login screen enter login and password information, the RDP tries to login and it seems that its logging in but aburuptly it says closing connection and terminates the RDP session. Does anybody know of any settings which has to be done or a solution to this problem! Thanks SJay]]>

If users have problems connecting to Win2k3 through rdp make sure they are in the Remote Desktop Users group, and check there user properties in the Active Directory. Windows firewall has been configered for 3389. I try to reach it from other XP Pro sp2 PCs using RDP client using the static IP address. I can not get anything, just "The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enables...." Two questions, 1/ do you have to have a static IP to set up remote connections between two XP Pro PCs not on a LAN? Are there other ways? 2/ do I need a more flexible modem? thanks in advance]]>

Although the screen is black, the laptop is still On but wouldn’t respond to any key and mouse strokes. However I am still able to connect to it using the client. What command can I use on my local machine to reboot (restart) my remote desktop. It often happens that I get disconnected from the remote desktop and then cannot log into it again until I’m back at the office to manually reboot it. Please help]]>

I remote into another machine via RD on my local LAN every day (XP Pro to XP Pro). Normally, it works just fine. Occasionally, however, I try to connect and see a login screen as if it’s going to connect, but I get dropped back to my local desktop. Hiking over to the machine I want to remote into and logging out and back in seems to ’reset’ things. It’s a problem that’s gotten worse, and I am not sure how to troubleshoot it. I suspect it’s got something to do with not having enough resources (the target machine often has several windows open, and is used heavily by me throughtout the day, tho via RDP, again). Any ideas?]]>

Anyone ever have the host permanently locked after RD-ing over LAN? I’m currently able to remote-connect ONLY. The host is black-screen, no inputs registering. I can remote connect and have tried each of the following: taskmgr to restart or shut down. I tried log off, disconnect, and even hit the ’x’. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...]]>

I hope you can help. I have a server running XP Pro that I have had no trouble connecting either within my network, or from the internet. Suddenly, though, no joy. I keep getting "remote connections might be disabled or the remote computer might be too busy" song and dance. I have changed no settings, but I rechecked them anyway. RDC is enabled, and I have the firewall turned off now. I cannot telnet into it, but I can browse to shared files on it, and I can ping it. Very strange... any help would be appriciated. BTW, I am running XP Pro SP2 behind a Netgear Wireless router. The computer is connected via a LAN port. I have PF configured for 3389 to this computer’s ip. As I said, nothing has changed.]]>

For Printer Issues From: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q302361 Printers That Use Ports That Do Not Begin With COM, LPT, or USB Are Not Redirected in a Remote Desktop or Terminal Services Session View products that this article applies to. Article ID : 302361 Last Review : December 20, 2004 Revision : 4.4 This article was previously published under Q302361 SYMPTOMS When you use Remote Desktop Connection or the Terminal Services Client version 4.0 or 5.0 to connect to another Windows-based computer from a computer that is not running Windows Server 2003, your local printers may not be redirected. As a result, your local printers are not available in the remote desktop or terminal services session. For example, if your Windows XP-based computer has a multifunction print device using a DOT4 port, it may not be redirected in a remote desktop session to a Windows 2000- or Windows Server 2003-based computer. CAUSE This problem occurs because the printer port does not begin with COM, LPT, or USB. By default, printer port names that do not begin with COM, LPT, or USB are only redirected in Windows Server 2003. By default, multifunction print devices may not be redirected unless you are running Windows Server 2003 on your local computer because they use DOT4 ports. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem on a computer that is not running Windows Server 2003, force all ports (including DOT4) on the client computer to be filtered for redirection. To do this, add a DWORD value named FilterQueueType to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR and set its value data to FFFFFFFF. Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR 3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4. Type FilterQueueType, and then press ENTER. 5. On the Edit menu, click Modify. 6. Type FFFFFFFF, and then click OK. This enables all ports on the client to be redirected. To work around this problem on a client computer that has a multifunction print device, change the port that the multifunction print device uses from DOT4 to an LPT port. For example, to configure a multifunction print device to use an LPT port on a Windows XP-based computer, follow these steps: 1. InControl Panel, openPrinters and Faxes. 2. Right-click the local printer that is not redirected, and then click Properties. 3. Click the Ports tab, click an LPT port, and then click Apply. The printer should now appear next to that port. 4. Close the Printer Properties window, and then reconnect by using Remote Desktop. Important When a multifunction printer is using a standard LPT port instead of the DOT4 port, it loses its multifunction capabilities, such as scanning, faxing, or copying. To regain the multifunction capabilities, the print device must use the DOT4 port. STATUS This behavior is by design. MORE INFORMATION To view the port name for your printer, or to determine if the device uses a DOT4 port, view the properties of that printer, and then click the Ports(or the Details) tab.]]>

Remote Desktop: At Your Desk While on the Roadhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/remote-computing/remote-desktop-at-your-desk-while-on-the-road#commentsAnchorSat, 12 Aug 2006 10:57:25 GMT
Very good article on RDP. I have used it for some time and also use Ultra VNC on my other machines running XP Home Edition. I recently encountered a problem with a public access at a hospital where neither RDP nor Ultra VNC would work. The host system apparently blocks them. Is it likely a simple matter of the host being configured to block port 3389? I want to send feedback to the admin of that sytem but I am ignorant of what advice to give should they wish to allow RDP or similar routines to work through their system.]]>
