If the multiple partitions are sharing physical disks, wouldn’t this behave the same as having two file groups on the same disk, i.e. little benefit?]]>

The best practice if for Log files to be placed separately from data files on RAID 1 or RAID 1 + 0, not RAID 5 as you tested. Perhaps there would be better performance on a RAID 1 array for the log files and a separate RAID 5 array for data?]]>
