I realize that this is an older article, but thought I’d point out another alternative - an all-in-one backup appliance that includes not only the hardware but the backup software and the backup server components as well all from a single vendor.

In the early ’80’s my oldest son and I worked on a Vic 20 and later a other hardware. The earliest software I can remember are the Apple programs he used in early grade school and WordStar I used at home. We never had anything for the Vic. He’s now a Enterprise Architect for a multi-national and I own my own technology company. We both still use and my oldest grandson is learning the tricks from WordStar.]]>

It was WordStar, back in 1988! I remember having to use all of the ’Alt’ key combinations to get it to do the various formatting commands. It was my first lesson in learning to make a back up of my work, since I lost a term paper by trying to format it!]]>

Disk Imaging Tools: Install, Clone, Managehttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/interoperability/disk-imaging-tools-install-clone-manage#commentsAnchorFri, 13 May 2005 16:05:44 GMT
M.T.’s comments (Continued from previous post): Also a thing worth mentioning in the text itself (not just in the table) is the fact that you cannot install Ghost Agent on a Linux computer. Option to install agent on Linux computers is a significant plus, if the environment has both Windows and Linux computers. The reason I stress these points is that I have during the last two months compared these two software’s, because they are to subject of my Bachelor’s thesis work. I can imagine you have deadlines and cannot spend months studying products but you left out some rather significant points concerning the comparison of these two products. As far as comparing the results I’ve got during the past couple of months and your results there are similarities and differences. Ghost is cheaper, nobody can go around that. Here in Finland, if you buy Ghost Solution Suite licenses for 120 workstations the price is $ 3700 and that’s it - no annual fee. If you should choose to buy Altiris Deployment Solution for 120 workstations, you must pay first $4900 and then $1500 each year for new licenses. Now there’s a difference! In my tests Ghost multicasted a 2 Gigabyte Windows XP image to 11 clients in 10 minutes. Altiris RapidDeploy multicasted the similar image to 11 clients in a whopping 27 minutes. To be more specific – Ghost multicasted with the speed of 300 Mb/minute while RapidDeploy multicasted with 75 Mb/minute. When comparing software packet deployment I did not notice any considerable differences in the processing speeds. It would have been interesting to know if you reached the similar results. Thanks for reading this far, your article was very interesting to read even though it wasn’t quite as thorough as I would have hoped. I’m sure I will be scouting through your site searching for other interesting documents as well now that I have the chance to. Thank you! Best regards, Mr. M. T. Finland ]]>

Disk Imaging Tools: Install, Clone, Managehttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/interoperability/disk-imaging-tools-install-clone-manage#commentsAnchorFri, 13 May 2005 15:52:33 GMT
I recently received a letter from a reader with some insightful comments both about this article and the products I reviewed. I thought I’d post it for other readers to consider. M.T. of Finland said that he’s had problems multicasting images due to some clients not booting. He also said that he found Altiris RapidDeploy much faster when testing it with 11 clients. Performance testing was a lesser part of my review, and I did test cloning only to one client at a time. M. T. also wanted to see more about software package deployment. Unfortunately, since Windows IT Pro content does go in print as well as online, editorial space is limited. Thank you very much for your comments M.T. If anyone else has used either or both of these product, feel free to post your opinions here or e-mail me at acarheden at windowsitpro.com. M.T.’s comments: Hello Mr. Carheden! I was very pleased to run into your article "Disk Imaging Tools: Install, Clone, Manage" when I was googling for Altiris Deployment Solution and Ghost Solution Suite comparisons in the net. In fact I was so interested in your article that I registered to Windows IT Pro just to read it. Having said this, I have some constructive criticism about your article: Firstly, you did not mention about the lab setup which you had. I got the picture that you just tested both suites with two clients. This setup hardly let’s you see how products manage a multicasting session which is the only way to go in a production environment. You might have – for example- noticed in a 10 client environment that only 8 of the clients managed to be cloned – and 2 never booted for cloning because of some weird problem. Then you just barely scratched the topic of ”software package deployment” – by mentioning it in the first paragraph. This is however an important module in both suites and it would have been interesting to see evaluation between how effectively RapidInstall and Ghost Autoinstall deploy packages. Software Inventory Management Productshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/auditing/software-inventory-management-products#commentsAnchorTue, 26 Apr 2005 14:46:31 GMT
In preparing this Buyer’s Guide, I spoke with some of the software inventory experts at Centennial Software. They argue that discovery of software and hardware assets is a key factor in managing an IT infrastructure that require good third party products. Centennial’s statement: A successful network or software inventory management strategy depends on one simple truth: you can’t manage what you can’t see. An organization must know exactly what applications are running on the network, where they’re physically located, when they were installed and how often they’re used. No longer a one time use expenditure, today’s quality "network discovery" tools generate comprehensive, and current reports of network assets with minimum impact to the network or end user. With increased visibility, an organization can more efficiently and effectively manage and optimize network assets to gain a business advantage. I’d like to know what readers our think. Is quality computer and software discovery key to managing a network, or is it just nice to have in case of an audit? Centennial’s experts have offered to monitor this thread and provide feedback to user comments. ]]>
