Nice to see application whitelisting on the list of desired features for endpoint protection. To enable a default deny strategy and ensure AWL is enterprise ready it must have automated ways to allow trusted software ... otherwise legitimate software will get blocked and users will get frustrated. No one argures whethere application whitelisting is the most effective endpoint protection. What is argued is whether it can be deployed in a dynamic end user environment where new software is continually introduced by end users, IT sfaff, and self-updating applications. Is it too disruptive? Symantec has done a nice job with SEP 12 adding Download Insight to assign reputation to software but it has a dependency on Microsoft's Attachment Manager. This limits the visibility into what can be detected and therefore is not a true default deny strategy (allow only trusted software to run). New malware that leverages existing vulnerabilities bypasses Microsoft Attachment Manager and therefore bypasses Download Insight. It is nice to see a reputation database used to confirm the integrity of new software. Bit9 has been doing this for years. McAfee declared over 250M malware variants in 2010 ... the 20 year old spy vs. spy malware war will not be won by vendors who use blacklisting as the core to their endpoint protection. As Neil MacDonald of Gartner said in his blog ... "application whitelisting" is foundational to endpoint security. Neil and Michael Silver have also put together an appliation control toolkit that is worth reading. ]]>

You are so very right about the service guarantees, or lack thereof. Before I found out I could get DSL where I live in rural California, I subscribed to a satellite internet connection thru DirectTV. When it worked, it worked very well. But after six months I gave up on it because I only averaged 1 week of connection per month. Most of the time I connected to the internet thru my original dialup service provider. And to compound the injury, I had to spend hours playing phone tag to get technical assistance when the service wasn’t working. I had much better things to do with my time.]]>

Office XP Product Activation: A Personal Sagahttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows-2000/office-xp-product-activation-a-personal-saga#commentsAnchorMon, 11 Jan 2010 17:34:21 GMT
I have a question… I am retired and travel the U.S. in my RV in the summer and park my RV in Arizona in the winter. I installed Office XP about two or three ago. When I installed it I also activated it. All of a sudden the last couple of months when I run any one of my office products which has already been activated a window pops up that asks me to activate my copy. The only selections are ‘ask me later’ or ‘activate’. I click on ‘ask me later’ and the product works fine. When I click on the file menu ’help’ then ’Activate’ it tells me it has already been activated. I tried to email Microsoft to find out how to fix this problem and they said Office XP no longer has free service and they want forty dollars from me to find out how to fix a bug in there product!! How do I get rid of that annoying window that keeps asking me to activate my Office XP version?]]>

Very Very Easy ant too good article. i took alot of help from there Becuase its related with my assignment. Assignment This assignment comprises two parts: the first requires you to produce a short (2 page) proposal document, defining the possible alternative approaches to providing a unified communications network for a particular client. You will then develop this initial proposal into a more detailed plan of work. As part of a refurbishment of a former factory building to provide a mixed use (apartments/ small business office space/ retail and leisure), it is planned to provide a building-wide networking facility. This networking facility will be IP-based, and will support all voice, video and data communication for the building. Therefore you should expect to provide for all forms of traffic, including, but not limited to, internet access (for both business and leisure use); video traffic (IPTV) and building monitoring and security. The designers have installed a wired (Cat 5 Ethernet) facility in the first stage of the development, but for a variety of reasons, they are considering wireless (802.11 a/b) connectivity for the remaining parts of the building complex. They have issued a call for proposals to provision and equip this remaining part of the building, and you have been asked to submit a proposal for the contract. This proposal process will be in two stages: an initial outline bid, of no more than 2 pages of A4, which will provide an overview of the main elements of the work you propose to carry out, and identifying (in outline only) at least two different possible technological approaches (one wired, one wireless). You will then be expected to submit a more detailed document describing the advantages and disadvantages of the alternative technologies you proposed in your first document, this should include identification of hardware requirements and any installation and maintenance costs; finally, you must include a section defining the planning and site survey you will need to carry out in order to address the business requirements. Suggested overall word count: approx 6000 words in total (1500 + 4500) Marks will be awarded for: • For the outline proposal: 1. Clarity, conciseness and accuracy of the proposal. • For the final report: 2. Coherence with initial outline proposal (or good reasons for deviation) 3. Clear explanations of the proposed solutions for the alternative technologies proposed 4. Your assessment of the likely quality of service for each solution 5. Your planned site assessment Half of the marks at each stage are awarded for each of the two possible solutions, therefore you must ensure that you deliver two separate potential solutions. Each criterion carries equal weighting (i.e. 20% of the overall mark), items 2 – 5 in the above list relate to the module learning outcomes in order; the outline proposal addresses elements of all these outcomes. OK sir Take care bye regards inam 07765001348]]>

My we have a plethora of posts, well just to introduce my issue is that..... Some how we got the rougue* virus "Antivirus Pro". Which is in the Antivirus trigger family. (For those who are not advanced in technology.) I do know how to remove it, but it requires an administrator account. Normally this would not be a problem that requires me to scratch my head. But unfortunaltly things never go conveniently for anyone. You see my sister knows the administrator account password while I do not. Of course you are now thinking "Go ask her you (insert insulting word/words here)." Hate to break it to you it is a bit more complicated than that she is in Europe and is not contactable for a long while. I would prefer not to wait because I need that malware off so I can do my projects. So if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. I do not want to change the password because then my sister would not be able to get on when she comes back. Because I will be going to a diffrent country before she comes back and will not be contactable. I do not want to download any programs or software (How should I know if they have even more viruses?) I would prefer not to mess with my computer too much with the coding. And I do not want to hire a professional to come to my house and get it off if I am perfectly capeable omit the fact that I can not bypass one little password.]]>

Backup and Restore, put simply, just doesn’t work on Vista Home Premium. Many files are not backed up, and dangerously it leads you to believe that the backup was successful! I have just learnt from this forum that it doesn’t do .exe and other files! Home Premium doesn’t even do complete backups. It is not up to the job of trying to be a professional operating system. A basic requirement of an operating system for the past 50 years has been the task of backing up (& restore if ever needed). Without this it should not even be released to Beta Testing. It is not "fit for purpose" (a legal consumer phrase in the UK) and you should get your money back from the supplier.]]>

I am very confused, not unusual when problem with computer as I just want to use it, not understand it. I read recently to establish a user account separate from the administrator account then malware can’t get in and change settings or other viscous things. this sounded good so was starting to do that when found a section on my computer in account changes about disabling something messenger. It sounded like a good way to enhance security and i think was written by windows (could be by compact), and so went online to hunt administrator tools to find steps to do that. Can’t find administrator tools. Search/help had this site as 1 listed. So now I am confused about both issues. I have XP home, have not yet tried moving administrator to an account other than one i generally use. Suggestions? help! Thanks]]>

Comparing File-Compression Softwarehttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/home-office/comparing-file-compression-software#commentsAnchorSat, 30 May 2009 16:03:09 GMT
I have used several zip programs to compress a 31MB 6 min. video to send to family and friends. The best compression I have gotten is from 31 to 30MB, so why bother? I click SEND, and within a couple of minutes, the e-mail comes back from all it is sent to stating by the server that the file is too big. HOW can I compress it to an acceptable level OR send some other way? I’m out of ideas. THANKS!]]>

Using the Built-In Windows FTP Clienthttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/ftp/using-the-built-in-windows-ftp-client#commentsAnchorThu, 16 Apr 2009 01:54:29 GMT
As Mike and SRIRAM commented, it doesn’t matter if you issue the "lcd" prior to the mget the file is written to the C: drive first with a temporary file name and once it is down Windows copies the file to the directory area issued by the "lcd". If you bring a big file down, you could fill up your C: drive and crash. I’ve had this occur where the file is down on the C: drive and the amount of time it takes Windows to copy it over to the target directory, my FTP session would timeout & drop the connection. Does anyone know of a override to stop Windows from writting the file initially to the C: drive and just directly where the ’lcd’ is coded ? thanks.]]>

I closed the welcome page and now I cannot locate the other administrator. When I visit the "Users Account" the only account I see is my limited. Now I am unable to install my new virus protection program. What can I do to reopen my welcome page? I do not have a Windows XP cd. I have (two) Compaq desktop/ Home, Windows XP SP2, IE7. When I start up in safe mode or log off I don’t see the "Switch user" option. "To reset the administrator account: Click on "start", click on "run" type "compmgmt.msc" and click "OK". In the "Computer Management" window on the left, click on "Local Users and Groups", then click on "Users". Next, "right-click" on the "Administrator" account and select "Set Password..." To disable windows from automatically booting in to an account, do the following: from the start menu, run regedit.exe and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\" change the value of "AutoAdminLogon" from "1" (the number one) to "0" (the number zero). You can also temporally bypass the auto logon on startup by holding down the shift key once the GUI starts to load (but before the user is automatically logged on); the startup process will then stop at the "classic logon prompt" and ask you to login. Changing the following registry value: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\DisableCAD" from 1 to 0 will require the user to press "Ctrl+Alt+Del" at the "classic logon prompt" to logon to the system. rick -February 28, 2005" On the computer management page there was no listing for "Local users and groups". the listings area; (1) System tools (2) Event viewer (3) Shared folders (4) Performance logs and alerts (5) Device Manager (6) Storage (7) Removable storage (8) Disk defragmenter (9) Disk Management (10) Service and applications When I clicked on some of these folders I got a message explaining "You do not have sufficient security privilege to install and uninstall these programs".]]>

Hughes DIRECWAY Satellite Return Systemhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/internet/hughes-direcway-satellite-return-system#commentsAnchorWed, 18 Feb 2009 23:33:53 GMT
This may help with some of the vpn issues some people are having with satellite internet. The satellite internet as you all know travels from the earth to space about 45,000 miles and back. That is where you get the latency in the speed. It is only about 1/2 a second. not that bad for that far of travel. Now for the vpn issue. HughesNet uses sophisticated acceleration techniques to enable high-speed performance over satellite. These acceleration techniques require access to data packet header information, which is blocked when IPSec-based VPNs are used. These VPNs encrypt the data and create a secure tunnel through the HughesNet network. The encrypted data cannot be processed by HughesNet’s acceleration techniques, therefore resulting in slower performance or no performance at all. This would be why you are logging on or off the vpn constantly. for those of you that don’t know read your FAIR ACCESS POLICY INFORMATION SHEET. when you surf the net your computer downloads information from the internet servers. you are downloading information. for wireless issues after your modem is programmed, unplug the network cable from your computer and plug it into a wireless router. i prefer the linksys they are cheap and easy to program. plug your computer in to the router and program it and you have wireless internet. I am a certified installer and dealer for both huges net and wildblue. Installation is the key to everything. with satellite internet you have 1.3 degrees of movement. with satellite tv you have 6.0. I also am a certified network administrator. if there is anything other questions i can answer feel free to e-mail me @ info@secommunications.net Thanks Andy]]>

A Problem With Installing 64-bit Vista http://www.sqlmag.com/article/deployment/a-problem-with-installing-64-bit-vista-#commentsAnchorTue, 17 Feb 2009 15:05:07 GMT
I recently was installing Vista Ultimate x64 and encountered the same issue. I could get the OS installed with 4GB of RAM but as soon as I tried to load the drivers for my video card (512MB RAM) the system would blue screen with the stop error. I too was able to get the patch installed manually, but then I was presented with the Windows Update issue of not being able to connect to Windows Update...sheesh. No wonder Vista gets a bad wrap I can’t imagine anyone outside the IT world having a clue about what to do with that. I guess that explains a lot of the "zombies" out there as it looks like a large number of Vista machines have never gotten updated...]]>

Debating on if I should get one. The Mini 9 that David mentions only has SSDs now [so it seems] and 8 or 16GB seems small. Other issue is that I still like an extra GB of RAM. The Mini 9 [again] has changed. Looks like 1GB max [at least at ordering time]. Outside of that with the exception of a lack of a DVD burner, a Netbook is quite useful for consultants out there....]]>

Windows 7 Offers Security Benefits for Small Businesseshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/access-control/windows-7-offers-security-benefits-for-small-businesses#commentsAnchorSat, 24 Jan 2009 23:27:29 GMT
My point is not that users will run out and buy more memory, especially in a corporate environement, nor do I expect corproate Vista users to upgrade to Windows 7 anytime soon, but future hardware purchases will definitely take the path of morer memory and 64-bit versions of the OS if the transition from existing XP and Vista systems can be handled smoothly. As far asthe folks who have eben tellig me that Windows 7 was running faster than XP, to the best of my knowledge, most of them were doing the same thing I’ve done; put Windows 7 on hardware that is a couple of years old 9at least) and available for use intheir test environments, not state-of-the-art equipment.]]>

"...and the low price of memory means that the typical Windows 7 desktop will have at least 4GB of RAM, if not more, ..." What companies are going to upgrade h/w for a new OS a year or so after doing exactly the same to get 1-2GB RAM for Vista - and in today’s economic climate (which looks like it will run for 18-24mths) ! Possibly companies who have not gone to Vista (I’m in a large financial organisation that runs 10000+ XP desktops/laptops) may go straight to Win7 if they have an upgrade project with a budget that hasn’t been put on hold, but it would be pure extravagance for businesses with Vista to do a company-wide h/w upgrade followed by an OS rollout so soon after the performing the same for Vista. And what high-spec h/w were users running when they said it ran faster than XP - let’s compare it on average business PCs please.]]>

Got my kids the Xbox and found out that I can use Xbox live :( I had to tell them they couldn’t play Halo3 on-line with their friend (problem 1). The FAP sucks too (problem 2). With the way the U.S. ecoonomy is shedding jobs, Hughes would do the citizens of America right by bringing the jobs back from India and the Philippines (problem 3). I bet Howard Hughes is rolling in his grave! I’m thinking of going DSL; any suggestions with ISP comparible to Hughes (i.e., when its working and when FAP hasn’t been activated)? Hughes STINKS. Evertime the wind blows I’m on limited access because of their so called "Fair Access" policy. I don’t see ANYTHING fair about it! If it ever happens to you once, they seem to cut you off at will - probably whenever they require more bandwidth. When I signed up for the service it was still Directway. Back then there were no limits. Then they switch it and raise the price on us all (hidden by telling you that you MUST upgrade and pay additional fees). I think they should be sued for false advertising. The girl on TV proudly lies that you will have "Faster surfing, faster downloads, faster everything!". She fails to mention "Just don’t use it, or we will force you down to speeds slower than dial up - get yours today!". Has anyone contacted a class action law firm yet? We might all get 50 cents each but at least these crooks will have to come off some money.]]>

Netbooks: Can They Bridge the Gap Between Mobile Phone and Notebook?http://www.sqlmag.com/article/mobile-and-wireless2/netbooks-can-they-bridge-the-gap-between-mobile-phone-and-notebook-#commentsAnchorThu, 18 Dec 2008 20:22:46 GMT
I totally agree with you David. Fooey on the Netbook naysayers ! I’ve been an engineer for over 25 yrs and have lugged around more systems than I can remember... and I’ve got the bad back to prove it. I recently picked up an Acer Aspire One and immediately fell in love with it. No more hauling the big laptop bag with my Thinkpad and accessories, as well as my regular briefcase too. The Acer netbook fits inside my briefcase with room to spare. Many people have commented that the 9" screen is too small for weary eyes... fortunately for me, with my reading glasses on, the 9" screen is perfect for me ! The Atom 1.6 has plenty of horsepower for almost any application that I need to run, including 600-800 line spreadsheets. My Acer has a 160gb HD which is more than enough space. I did have to add a bluetooth usb dongle, as Acer forgot this little chip in their design ! Now I can hot sync my Alltel Palm Treo wirelessly to keep my phone info up-to-date. And like you, for any extended travel, I do take my Thinkpad. The netbooks are also much more convenient in the cramped flying pepsi cans we call airplanes ! In the short time I’ve had my netbook, I’ve resold over half a doz to my clients without nary a sales pitch !. Having been an Acer Var for many years, I naturally sell the Aspire One. I highly recommend them as an addition to a mobile worker’s technology toolkit ! Great article... I always enjoy your columns.]]>

Hughes DIRECWAY Satellite Internet Accesshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/internet/hughes-direcway-satellite-internet-access#commentsAnchorFri, 12 Dec 2008 04:30:12 GMT
To all of you wondering why Hughes Net won’t work with xbox live...SPACE. You are communicating with a satellite dish in orbit. Every pack of info leaves your dish, travels to their sats, and then is sent back to your dish. This creates major latency, and I mean major, making it impossible to effectively play pretty much all games. I have hughes, and it works with xbox live for the simple things. Downloading updates, demos, chatting with friends, etc. Hell, I can even play gears of war 2 with friends, but I am skipping all over the map and I average about 1/4 of my usual kills due to the lag. And don’t even think about Halo 3 or COD 4, the matchmaking won’t even let you find games to join. You can however play guitar hero and rock band flawlessly. Anyways, I have had it for 2 years now and I hate my internet life, I ended up getting Sprint’s EVDO broadband just for my xbox live fix. Works perfect.]]>

Mixing Wired and Wireless Networking in Your Homehttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/laptops-and-notebooks/mixing-wired-and-wireless-networking-in-your-home#commentsAnchorWed, 10 Dec 2008 21:21:14 GMT
Hi, a fascinating article. OK here goes my wired network typology starts with a cable modem connected to an Internet server (nothing much more than a fire-walled computer between the modem and the switching hub that two computers are connected to). Now I want to stream music (mp3s) and visualisation from my computer (one of the two connected to the switching hub) and my TV down stairs. 1/ I know I need a wireless media player. 2/ I know I must have some sort of wireless network router. Here’s my question: Can I simply cat5 the router into the switching hub to get what I need. As everything I have read here and elsewhere seems to suggest I need to have the wireless router connected to the internet cable 1st. Any help on putting me straight would be real cool.]]>

Hughes DIRECWAY Satellite Internet Accesshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/internet/hughes-direcway-satellite-internet-access#commentsAnchorSat, 22 Nov 2008 15:17:22 GMT
XBOX LIVE IS NOT SUPPORTED ON HUGHES! THE LAST DISAPPOINTMENT FROM HUGHES! Hughes/DirectPC (the same monopoly as with ATT) does not support XBOX. Not because of any technical hurdles but because they want to save money and they expect you to only be reading one-way, cachable web pages. With gaming the traffic load is not demanding, but it is not "fixed" or compressable. Also more importantly it is not "viewable". Check your traffic routes as it goes through GSA sites and 10 internal hops before getting out to the INET for simple family web surfing, sad state that is the NSA’s focus. This must be why XBOX, or semi-free information exchanges are NOT supported. XBOX LIVE reports inconsistent MTU errors from Hughes. When logging traffic XBOX is blocked by Hughes’ "NOXBOXLIVE" proxy address. XBOX MTU error indicates too small of an MTU size but from a PC a larger size, non-fragged size CAN be used. Cancelling Hughes’ monopoly service, or lack of service. ATT is the same socialist model as Hughes.]]>

Hello, Folks “The Problem Solver” is back to elucidate your stodgy and pathetic queries. Ok lets hit the main point (1) In most cases the Administrator account that one is using in Windows Xp is not actually an Admin account. It is a sub-set of an Admin account to put it into simple words it is basically Secondary Admin account with unlimited rights. For Instance: My account name is Problem Solver and I’m admin of my system but actually I’m not the First Admin I’m the secondary Admin. The real admin account is always hidden and it can be recalled by starting Win Xp in safe mode. When u start your Win Xp in safe mode only the Original Admin account will be demonstrated and rest of the accounts will be disabled.<<<< Procedure>>> To do this follow my footsteps reboot you system and press F8 key, just before the Windows Xp boot screen. From there select the option “Start Windows in Safe Mode” and hit the Enter key. Now wait for the windows jolts and its file selection criteria… after all this Gnostic drama by Windows u will finally see the light of hope in the form of an Admin Account. Wooohoo! This account in most of the cases is blank password account just log into this account and have fun. NOTE: In safe mode windows will disable the colour driver and other GUI features so you will only be able to work in the filthy colour environment. Mostly it is (640x480 resolution and 16 or 256 colors) resolution. But it is not nail biting situation on the next reboot it will open normally. IMPERATIVE: If you are using a Domain account on shared network then you have to manually type the Administrator in the user name text box on the Log in Dialog Box. Or contrary you will log in to the same account that you are already using. CAUTION: This information is intended for troubleshooting purpose and it shouldn’t be used for malicious intentions. There is also a way to break into the Password Protected account. But it is not explained here. Further more you can also create another Secondary Admin account for this account. To do this go to Start > Control Panel > Users Accounts and then create another account with Administrator rights and ffs remember the password this time. And in the end get out of the seventh heaven and Thanks Me and Microsoft for this bug.. ? Further queries will be entertained through email. But please don’t send spam mail or else… Yikes i just threat! Email: problemsolver@elitemail.org. Kindly note that I’ll not reply to the queries regarding password breaking or this kinda stuff so only ask technical questions rather than stupid ones.]]>

Additionally, while they have a very large library of books, most of them are lousy books, and the library content is weak. For example, perform a search on their site for books that pertain to SQL Server 2008. There is hardly anything there, and what is there is weak. I wrote to them about this weakness and never heard from them, and they have not added content. I receive a weekly automated e-mail from them, showcasing the new books they’ve added. While they always have a dozen or more new books, almost all of them are poor quality. I suppose if they got a lot of the really good books, that would cost a lot of money for them. So they have to get books that are not popular, in order to keep costs down. They have to sacrifice quality for quantity.]]>

Books 24x7 APPEARS useful on the surface, but becomes very impractical as you attempt to use it. I have a free subscription here at work. If you skim through a book to see if it is useful or to find certain content, the company will accuse you of stealing the book and threatens to close your account. So skimming is out. The search features are shallow and slow, so it is very difficult to find what you need. Even though I have the free subscription, I don’t use it much due to the problems I mentioned and other obstacles.]]>

Your article provided some of my questions with answers. I have an odd situation with which I need some assistance. I have a DSL modem with its own internal router. The modem has outputs to: Ethernet, USB, and Wireless. I run the Ethernet output to a small 4 port output router, and then two outputs via cat 5 cable to two different computers. Each computer has internet access and "sees" the other computer. I have a laptop which uses the wireless portion of the Modem, and is upstream of the router. The laptop cannot "see" or be "seen" by the other computers. How can I get the laptop to look downstream at the two other computers and "see" and been seen"? Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.]]>
