I have an Intel STL2 dual processor board with x 2 PIII cpus. A year after I installed both CPU’S it now shows only one cpu, and device manager shows a Standard HAL. Does this mean that I installed the HAL wrong in the first place or can a HAL change when a cpu fails after a reboot? I presume that I can install a new secondary cpu and then just upgrade the Standard HAL to a multiprocessor HAL?]]>

It will load (it takes forever because I have about 2,000 fonts on my hard drive). Once Illustrator has loaded, it won’t let me do anything. I stops and I get an error message that the program is not responding. Am I right to believe that the number of fonts Adobe Illustrator loads are clogging the program up and causing it to shut down? If not, would you know the of the possible cause and a solution? Thanks]]>

My company runs into issues like this all the time. The problem with NT backup as well as all the others is they are backing up an active database. At anytime the backup file can get corrupt. That is why we created a solution, the Exchnage Recovery Backup System which pulls the information out of Exchange and allows for instant access to email files whether Exchange is running or not. For more information go to www.erbsystem.com or call Michael Stankard at 727-642-5521. We offer free initial support for Exchange server problems and in most cases can get you up and running in no time. Closer inspection thereof revealed an easily missed "missing tag". Inserting the missing close tag did the trick. Good luck]]>

Ryan was right, disableing the 3rd party browser extentions did fix the printing problem, however, by disabling 3rd party party browser extensions, Browser Helper Objects (BHO’s) also get disabled, and such things as Google Toolbar will no longer run. After becoming aware of this problem I decided to use HijackThis to discover what BHO’s were actually installed on the machine in question. The idea being that perhaps a BHO might be responsible for the original printing issue. HijackThis turned up a BHO for Newdotnet 6.9. Luckily uninstalling this from Control Panels/Add Remove Software completely removed this version of Newdotnet. (In the past, Newdotnet was notorious for being one of the hardest Spyware programs to get rid of). After it’s removal and re-checking "Enable 3rd party party browser extensions" from Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab, and a reboot of the computer, I tested the printing issue and found that it was still corrected. So in conclusion, if Unchecking "Enable 3rd party party browser extensions" does fix the problem, use HijackThis to locate any un-reputable BHO’s such as Newdotnet, and remove them. This may well cure the problem without disabling all programs that utilize BHO’s like Google Toolbar and Adobe Acrobat.]]>

I found the solution by accident but it works each tome trust me. here is the receipe remove the a/c power and the battery. take a flat head screwdriver and while pushing the POWERON buton enter the head of the screw driver inside of the usbport the head must be placed to have a on both 4 pins inside the usb port and the metal border of the port. it will discharge the remaining electricity inside the capacitor. replace the power ac and batterie and start it your laptop will restart as a new. repeat it each time you have the problem i am sure it will help Renault from Montreal]]>

An IBM ThinkPad Hibernation Glitchhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/hardware/an-ibm-thinkpad-hibernation-glitch#commentsAnchorSun, 21 Aug 2005 22:08:58 GMT
I’ve been reading people’s reviews on this board several months now. I bought my thinkpad T21 used on ebay in November 2004, and it started showing these problems back in April 2005. At that time, I left the machine untouched and powered down for two days, and after that it came back up fine. I then used it normally, for almost 4 months, before the problem hapenned again in August 2005. My problem is pretty much identical to how you all have described here: When I try to shutdown or restart from the Start Menu, it just hangs. Then I either have to remove the battery and AC power, or keep the power button pressed for 5 seconds to restart the computer. But when I restart it, I only get a blank screen, and it stays there. I don’t get any BIOS screen, any warning beeps, screen flicker, etc. It just stays blank and it sits there with the hard drive humming, and the cooling fan running. So, in August this year I tried the refrigerator technique, and it worked. But the problem hapenned again two days later. And then the refrigerator technique stopped working too. So this time I turned on the laptop and let it run with the blank screen until the battery died. When I connected the AC power and turned it back on, it was fine. So, overall, these are three methods I’ve tried: 1. turn it off for 2-4 days, and then turn it on (Its worked once or twice for me, but not lately) 2. Put it in the refrigerator (this worked once for me, but not after that). 3. If I get a blank screen at power up, leave it on with the battery disconnected, and let it discharge. I’ve had the most success with this method. It has worked everytime the problem has hapenned (now 3 times in the last 3 weeks). Feel free to email me if you guys have any thoughts on this. rishi.r.arora@gmail.com. I think I’ll buy a cheap used battery from ebay, because it’ll probably discharge fully much sooner. This will help me reduce my recovery time next time the problem happens. Regards - Rishi]]>

I searched the I.B.M sight and the British web sites for a cure, then I thought of trying the American sites and found this one. I tried the fridge cure and left the p.c in it overnight with no luck, tried it again last night and I am now using the T20 to write this on. Wont read disks anymore though, I will have to see if I can now sort that out. thanks for the strange advice that works Dave.....uk]]>

Fixing a Logitech Keyboard Errorhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/configuration/fixing-a-logitech-keyboard-error#commentsAnchorMon, 08 Aug 2005 17:04:12 GMT
I have recently connected a kvm switch, for which I only need to hit the scroll lock key 2x to switch back & forth. My f-keys are no longer mappable, even through the iTouch front-end application. My first thought is that they’re possibly using the same .dll files, so I plan to investigate that option... In the meantime, does anyone know if this is a know issue with Logitech software?]]>

Hi,eveyone there, My T20 also died hard over here now. I can’t get it power on for long even if I left it "rest" for quite a few days. I must be due to a badly impaired damn-capacitor inside. I’m wondering if replacing the power board work it out or I have replace the whole system board. Where is this dying "damn-capacitor" located? Any clue? Thanks alot!]]>

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Photoshop (same old version 4, and not MS Photo Editor) and the thumbnails disappeared. All that won’t display as thumbnails are jpgs. Before I dive into changing registry keys, I thought I better check to see if there wasn’t another approach. I never even had Photo Editor to begin with. ]]>

An IBM ThinkPad Hibernation Glitchhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/hardware/an-ibm-thinkpad-hibernation-glitch#commentsAnchorFri, 22 Jul 2005 09:42:48 GMT
New solution Make these changes: --> Display properties --> Screen Saver --> Power --> Power Scheme --> system standby - never --> system hibernates - after 2 hours --> Advance --> When I close the lid - nothing --> When I press the power - hibernate --> When I press the sleep - hibernate The key here is not to: 1. let the laptop go to standby mode. 2. Use only hibernation. 3. Never shut the computer off (hibernate only) 4. when you start the compute again (wake up from hibernation) always make sure the A/C cord is plugged to the laptop and to the outlet. 5. Never let the battery go down to zero and force the computer to go into standby mode (very important) It has worked for me for the last month. Hope this helps. Carlos]]>

An IBM ThinkPad Hibernation Glitchhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/hardware/an-ibm-thinkpad-hibernation-glitch#commentsAnchorThu, 21 Jul 2005 19:03:19 GMT
I never would have purchased this laptop had i known about all these problems. I have an R31 Laptop and it decided to have problems turning on a little over a year ago. Basically when i plug the adapter in sometimes i see a power light sometimes i dont, however the keyboard light remains lit (at the top of the lcd monitor). However if i jiggle the cable just right or if i moved the computer in a certain way i can get it to turn on so long as i dont move it. If i move it just an inch it will power off again. Any suggestions? I have tried to IBM Tech solution and it doesnt work. I know the last time i turned it on the battery had 60% remaining. Is it a bad power adapter? When the computer turns on it works fine but it just WONT turn on unless i jiggle the laptop around for like 30 min. Thanks - Mel]]>

I got in touch with Dell and after going through the Q & A bit with them they found their internal article that talks about certain version of a particular mother board having this issue. My company has the 4 hr bronse service on this particular server, so they dispatch a tech to replace the mother board. I ran a backup test overnight and had no reboot problems. I am pretty certain that the problem is resolved since all previous times my backup would run, the server would reboot itself. I hope this information helps someone else, because this problem is a pain and their is not a lot of information out there about how to fix it. I would appreciate any suggestions from any one else that has had this similar problem....Angelo ]]>

I have a suggestion for everyone of you with IBM thinkpad problems. If you are afraid to loose data then buy a laptop to IDE adapter or a laptop to USB adapter to use on a desktop system. In doing so you will have access to your files. You can backup at the time as well. MLH Master]]>

I have the same problem with a T40 (not powering on). Called IBM tech support. Tried the IBM tech solution 1.) Unplug the power cord and the battery. 2.) Press the ’Power’ Button 5-6 times repeatedly. 3.) Then hold the ’Power’ Button down for 30 seconds. 4.) Put the battery back in and plug the power cord back in. Did not work. Then they said it needs a new system board. Since it is under warranty, they will be sending me a prepaid shipping box to send it to Memphis, TN for repair. Should be back in 3-5 business days. Hopefully this takes care of the problem.]]>

Since I first came upon this article, I’ve been searching the internet for further evidence of Thinkpad internal power failures. Apparently the A2* series is notorious for these, but the T2* and even T4* series now appear to be having problems too. There seem to be two failure modes, possibly related: one is failure to (re-)start and the other is spontaneous power-off during normal operation. The latter can also corrupt the CMOS if it happens during bootup, preventing further bootup. I don’t know if sleep/hibernation has anything to do with either problem, but some believe the cause is deterioriation (or even complete loss) of the thermal bond between CPU and heatsink, some that it’s due to faults developing in the power management chips (or other components?) on the system board. Maybe all these come under the general category of heat-induced failure. I don’t know how other makers’ laptops fare over time, but personally I think IBM’s reputation for quality is being damaged by these failures. (Just a thought: could this be a factor in IBM’s recent shedding of its PC division...?)]]>

Hello, I have a T40p, and it looks like I’m having similar problems to the ones described above. I have tried some of the tricks mentioned. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t. The machine is under warranty, but at in IBM authorized shop I went to they told me they won’t honor the warranty becuase they think I spilled something on the laptop, and it is not defective. I have NEVER spilled anyting on it, but it’s my word agaist Big Blue, and I can’t win that battle. So, my question is, has anyone had this issue fixed by IBM?]]>

I have been a IBM Thinkpad T20 user for last 3+ years and I think it is an very sturdy system that it’s been working non-stop for such a long time with not a single problem even after so much of abuse it went thru in my baby’s hands......until last week when it just wont boot up. Then I found this post online....I tried the refrigerator option also to no avail. Finally I just removed the battery and AC and let the system sit for a 2 days in a cool place near window. Third day I plugged in battery, plugged in the AC, and voila, it comes up fine. Right now I am backing up all my files and I’ll keep you posted if it experiences a boot problem again. If I don’t post again, assume it’s all working good again !! Bottom line is that it could be the overcharged capacitor in my case and letting it sit alone discharged it completely. Good luck to you!]]>

Oh and just one more thing to help you out. This problem is caused by an overcharged capacitor (supposedly) and the error ONLY occurs IF you leave the laptop plugged in too long with the battery in. If you ONLY plug it in when you are using it, then it should not overcharge. And actually I would suggest that you unplug it about 20 min or so before you are done using the system. I don’t know how IBM would let one of their products be this defective and not do anything about it, but apparently they just don’t care like they used to. Kinda like DELL and GATEWAY (I have worked for both). I tell you the ONLY computer I would buy (if you don’t like Macintosh) would be an Alienware. The folks there know how to build a real stand-up product and they stand by it. GREAT COMPANY. www.alienware.com

IBM has finally given me a fix for the T21 I am working on for a customer. I asked them "What if it doesn’t work, then what. Their response was "GAURENTEED to work". Here it is: 1.) Unplug the power cord and the battery. 2.) Press the ’Power’ Button 10 times repeatedly. 3.) Then hold the ’Power’ Button down for 25 seconds. 4.) Put the battery back in and plug the power cord back in. 5.) Should power up right away. This did work THIS time on the machine I have in front of me. I hope this works for all of you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me and ask any questions. Sincerely, J.R. McKenney IT Professional Twisted Image twistedimagejunk@comcast.net ]]>

I received a ThinkPad (T23) in the post a few days ago. It had been left in Sleep mode and the battery was too flat to boot. I had intermittent power-on probs for a day or so. Now if I press the power button nothing happens, but removing the backup battery at this point will turn the machine on (no need to press the power button again). Leaving the backup battery out entirely solves the problem, and the machine turns on first time with no problem. I think the Power Manager has got stuck into thinking there’s no power by the extended sojourn in sleep mode with a near flat battery. Obviously, cannot really do without the backup battery so first I am going to apply a BIOS update and see if that works, then leave it overnight without the backup battery etc and see if it resets itself. . .]]>
