Jeffrey, if you say the core is the basis then it is a sign that Microsoft has a change of heart towards user interface. Beginning with Windows 1.0, up until PowerShell and Core, Microsoft had told us GUI was the right choice. GUI on top of PowerShell is paying lip service. Like GUI in Exchange 2007-2010 envrionment: If you want to do something serious you have to switch to PowerShell. Simple and easy were two words against the Microsoft products in the past. Prior to Exchange 2007 we had to switch to command prompt just for repairing and defragging the Exchange databases, nothing more. Now, we have to frequently issue PowerShell commands. I'm not against command prompt. But commands must be short, understandable and easy. PowerShell commands are typically long, hard to grasp and impossible to remember. And last; don't forget that Microsoft gained popularity on the client side first. Then it proceeded to the server side. Do you think Apple and Android stop before proceeding to the server side?]]>

@Murat. It isn't an "EITHER/OR" situation, it is an "AND situation. I totally reject the notion that users have to choose between a GUI and a command line interface. There is this little thing I like to call architecture which means that we can and will deliver both. Take a look at the new Server Manager GUI we are shipping in Windows Server 8. It is multi-machine, it is rich, it is gorgeous and we spent a ton of resources developing it. It is also layered on top of PowerShell so that, for the admins that want to, they can automate everything that you can do in Server Manager. Trust me, when you have hundreds, thousands and hundreds of thousands of machines (we actually do), you want to automate them. Sounds like that is not your environment which is fine, that is why we delivered a great GUI for you. So Murat - the beta of Windows is going to be available in Feb. If you are interested, pick up a copy and kick the tires. I think you are going to be SUPER happy. Jeffrey Snover Distinguished Engineer and Lead Architect for Windows Server ]]>

Jeffrey, I think you don't understand where the IT sector goes. Apple IPAD, IPHONE and Android systems show that future lies in the GUI. GUI everywhere. And you think GUI is good only at the client side! We, the system admins, have loved Windows Server because it is just Windows. We used to doing tasks using GUI tools. It had been so easy and joyful. We pitied Linux guys because they had to do every single task using tedious command line commands. Now, you want us to be in the same bizarre situation. You offer Server Core and PowerShell. Two poisonous technologies.Thank you Jeffrey! ]]>

Dynjamic Access Control is a fundamental re-architecting of file security. It is a major improvement in terms of central management of security on files, and the first step of protecting information based on its value (classification) rather than on it's location. Claims are very powerful and with the integration of ADFS into the base Windows 8 Server, implementation of claims will become easier. For those interested in SharePoint we have extended this concept to SharePoint with our Titus Metadata Security Claims edition solution for SharePoint. One cannot say "Hyper-V now has..." since Windows Server 2012 (or whatever it will be called) has not been released and will not be available until Q3/Q4 of 2012 at the earliest. You could say "will have". You did note it is "pre-beta", but I disdain vendors who talk about future capabilities in the present mode as if one can run out to the reseller and get ir right now. Let's check about next year and see what has been dropped or pushed off to the R2 release. Let's see what other vendors have available at that time.]]>

A great article! While I consider myself a bit in front of the curve as we are beginning to layout our budget/plans for implementing "workforce to SaaS"; it would be interesting to see where others are re: the opposite direction. By that I mean, enabling your "Marketing" department's web presence, sales apps, customer service apps, etc via Federation/SAML. What are others doing in the sphere of enabling this to their various backend, in situ, disparate apps where one person from CustomerX may already have some kind of access (via dedicated VPN's to your company) or has reports sent them... how are others bringing these together into a truly personalized portal experience for their Customers/Partners/Suppliers? How do we get around having to setup so many separate, individual SAML trust relationships with so many different parties? (say for instance up to 1000 customer entities with 3-4 users from each) Connecting an "extranet" instance as the IdP to your various contributing SP apps right now is a very daunting task - per chance even being a limiting factor to do so at all!?! How do you provision to such an abstracted IdP? How can you then trust that the person on the end really is indeed who you think it is without complicating their logon experience? These are some of the next generations of tough questions! -Richard Gardner Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto]]>

Hybrid cloud models are a major part of where I see the Microsoft UC/Messaging market going - specifically for the upper-mid market and enterprise (1000 seats+).

Strangely enough - I’ve even had my first "Community Cloud" architecture discussion last month with an organization requiring some tough Gov statutes along with tight federation with some other companies.

Hi! I enjoyed reading this article. My first certs were on Win2000, and I also thought back then how awesome AD was, and was constantly thinking how I was going to get out there and start convincing people to use AD. To this day, I still find myself in environments where the NT4 way of doing things somehow is the dominant scheme, and even if they have Win2003 or 2008, still has a taste of old, scripts everywhere instead of GPOs, for instance. So even if NT4 boxes are not out here anymore, the mindset still is. But slowly but surely everyone realizes the benefits of the new way of doing things, specially on R2. I guess that will be the way virtualization slowly creeps in IT environments over the next ten years.]]>

Features that Sell Your Upgradehttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/migration/features-that-sell-your-upgrade#commentsAnchorFri, 28 Jan 2005 06:35:09 GMT
Hi Sean, we were quite excited about "Volume Shadow Copy", and we are using it on all our file servers. The experiented that most of the calls we got regarding file restore were dealing with files that were lost or deleted within the last 2 days ("...I had the file yesterday, but now its gone..."). Instead of searching the correct DLT tape, putting it into the library in the DataCenter, then doing the restore, users can now search for previous versions of files by themselves. This saved our helpdesk a lot of restore calls, and users are excited that they can bring back older versions of files so fast and by themselves. ---Stivie]]>

App Compathttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/migration/app-compat#commentsAnchorTue, 25 Jan 2005 08:50:16 GMT
Yeah it was but it addresses the point that AD preparation tools for various applications are never something to rely on so if (and when) things were to go wrong you need to ensure that as part of the migration planning you take time out to resolve anything that’s going to hamper troubleshooting down the line ie. bring everything level, ensure applications are working, understand how applications interact with domain services, what changes are being made/going to be made when you introduce AD into the fold, eliminate as many outstanding/known issues pre-upgrade. The whole migration process it’s self is, I think most will agree, relatively simple; it’s when there hasn’t been enough thought or care put into the planning of the process that invites the problems.]]>

It sounds like this wasn’t W2K3’s fault, but either the service pack or the NT(SE) updates. So after "bring all clients...level with one another", I’d add "and make sure they’re all working again". In a similar vein, doing a pre-upgrade reboot is a good idea. It will clear any transient issues, and if you do have regular startup errors (we all know they’re pretty common), you’ll have it documented in the system log. If you then see errors in the log after the upgrade, you’ll know it’s a pre-existing condition, not the upgrade. ]]>

Are Microsoft's Support Plans for Win2K Affecting Your Decision to Move to W2K3?http://www.sqlmag.com/article/migration/are-microsoft-s-support-plans-for-win2k-affecting-your-decision-to-move-to-w2k3-#commentsAnchorWed, 19 Jan 2005 11:04:09 GMT
I think you’ll find a number of reasons it’s worthwhile. There is a significant performance boost between W2K and W2K3. The hardware footprint is pretty much identical, so if you can shoehorn W2K into it you can install W2K3 as well. Application compatibility is the sticking point, but if you upgrade a server rather than rebuild, I think you’ll find the security for an application is a bit easier. And by now, pretty much all of vendors know their W2K3 compatibility; you’ll certainly have to test but you don’t need to start from scratch. (TallSean is the author. The handle is an old joke between Sean Daily and I.)]]>

App Compathttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/migration/app-compat#commentsAnchorSun, 16 Jan 2005 01:21:12 GMT
I was recently involved in the migration of a mid-sized network (~2000) from NT4 to Server 2003. The biggest headache for me was that they employed HP’s NT(SE) encrypted authenication software throughout the network so it sat on all the servers, Terminal Servers & clients. Normaly something like this wouldn’t bother me but like most enterprises there were multiple builds and configurations, and the deployment plan was a phased one which meant I had to ensure that everything was leveled out before I begin the upgrade. This meant that, without any sort of management tools in place, I had to deploy SP6a to everything, patch NT(SE) because the service pack defaults back to the Microsoft GINA and apply a ’compatibility’ kit to allow AD translation between the clients & the PDC. There were a few other tweaks as well but that was the bulk of it.. and I managed to do it all remotely without any patch systems or management servers as well! The one big problem I had was with WTS, Terminal Server. After applying all the relivant updates etc none of the TS clients could authenicate to the domain so after a few hours of poking about I had discovered that the updates hadn’t written a registry key to allow the clients to use the encrypted GINA values. Lessons learnt; make sure to bring all clients and servers level with one another, this will hours if not days of screaming and swearing when you’re trying to track down an application fault. Also, look to see what is being modified if any application patches or updates are needed. You have the luxuary that NT4 applications are generally not as complex as their AD-aware counterparts so looking to see what it’s doing, comparing it with whats supposed to happen helps address the problems quickly when the updates don’t work ie. missing registry keys!]]>

Multiple-Forest Trustshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/kerberos/multiple-forest-trusts#commentsAnchorMon, 12 Jan 2004 13:55:57 GMT
Sean Deuby’s Multiple-Forest Trusts (April 2003, http://www.winnetmag.com, InstantDoc ID 38280) was a revelation to me. Just as IT administrators insisted on not doing Windows 2000 in the Windows NT 4.0 way, we must now realize that Windows Server 2003’s potential goes beyond Win2K’s capabilities. More articles like this one are welcome!]]>

I have been trying since last Wed to re-establish a one way trust with no joy. I can add them as a trusting, but they can’t add me as a trust, because it’s saying my domain is not available, yet they can ping my server. I just learning all this and I have a Spawar tech helping me, but he’s even clueless. I needed this fixed yesterday as I work for one of the big guys. Appreciate any help. Thanks!!!!]]>

What's New in Windows .NET Server's Terminal Services?http://www.sqlmag.com/article/ip-addressing/what-s-new-in-windows-net-server-s-terminal-services-#commentsAnchorSat, 22 Feb 2003 08:47:58 GMT
All sounds interesting; however, will they have fixed the never-ending issues with Printer Redirection that have been broken / fixed / broken again with security patches, etc, especially when using TSAC? New features are great, but I bet you’d find thousands of admins and users alike that would just like for all the basic functionality to work without having to spend countless hours on Forum sites and support calls. Microsoft’s (and most s/w vendors) idea of ROI never seems to include factors such as "time wasted just getting the thing to work", "support calls", "pouring over the growing list of Bulletins", etc.. Despite the TS hype, the new features are a step in the right direction, they just really need to work on their printing issues. They can keep Session Manager; make printing work and that will be worth the upgrade alone.]]>

Nice article, however, 99% of the things presented here as "new in .NET" exist in windows 2000 Terminal Services. The GPO for disallowing users to log in is acheivable by typing at a cmd prompt "wlbs drainstop." Problem solved. The only new thing introduced in this article is sound redirection.]]>

Windows 2000 Glossaryhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows-2000/windows-2000-glossary#commentsAnchorMon, 12 Mar 2001 15:43:27 GMT
Re: your definition of "AD" in Windows 2000 glossary. That definition could only be understood by someone who already knew the definition. How exactly can a namespace be a "backbone?" Although "multimaster replication" may be a term known within a small sphere of computer professionals, many people need to know what AD is, if only to understand ADSI. It would be a good idea to expand terms that are not generally known within the profession to only include those terms that are.]]>

10 Reasons to Migrate to Windows 2000 and 10 Reasons to Waithttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/migration/10-reasons-to-migrate-to-windows-2000-and-10-reasons-to-wait#commentsAnchorTue, 16 May 2000 12:04:03 GMT
At the Windows 2000 (Win2K) launch in Oklahoma City, I picked up a copy of Windows 2000 Magazine and read Sean Deuby’s "10 Reasons to Migrate to Windows 2000 and 10 Reasons to Wait" (February 2000). The article says Win2K has 30 million lines of code and is the largest programming artifact in existence. At the launch, all the presenters said Win2K will work on a 133MHz machine (although they suggested a Pentium II machine) with 64MB of RAM. I wouldn’t load Windows 98 on such a machine, so is it realistic to think I can load Win2K and expect it to work properly? I work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a contract PC support technician, and I’m writing this letter on my 133MHz laptop that has 32MB of RAM. Although my laptop isn’t the most up-to-date model, it meets my needs (I have a more powerful desktop system for other tasks). I still run Win95 on the laptop because I’ve run Win98 on 133MHz to 166MHz machines at work and they’re really slow. Microsoft tells you that Win98 will work fine on these slower machines, but it doesn’t. Usually, I install Win98 on a machine only if the machine has at least 64MB of RAM and a 200MHz processor. How much hard disk space will I need for Win2K? What do you suggest as a realistic minimum hardware configuration for the OS? I don’t want to tell people not to go to Win2K, but I’d like to have some idea about whether the hardware I might be asked to put the new OS on will actually support it and not diminish performance.]]>

I’m writing this response on a 200MHz Pentium MMX machine with 64MB of RAM, and Win2K runs significantly faster than the Windows 98 Second Edition (Win98SE) installation I was running several weeks ago. (OK, the machine is overclocked to 223MHz.) I’ve also run Win2K successfully on a 150MHz Toshiba Portege 660CDT with 80MB of RAM. This configuration isn’t ideal for game-playing, but it gets the job done without paging as much as you might think. Any amount of RAM higher than 64MB is gravy, but because Windows 2000 Professional (Win2K Pro) has a big memory footprint (almost 64MB), don’t run a lot of applications concurrently.]]>
