jkohut. No semblance of sanity here. Just the futility of a legal system manifestly unable to deal with these matters. Judge and jury is not the answer. Sadly enough, I don't have an alternative. I actually played through this a couple of weeks ago during a sick day. lol I kind of enjoyed the pace. It was a nice change from the frenetic hack and slash constant run and gun tactics so many games employ. I found it neat that the game keeps track of your choices and then when you finish compares those choices to the population at large. Looking forward to episode 2. ]]>

Finally, some semblance of sanity in the courts and Technology sector. Let's hope if nudges all litigants (Apple, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, Microsoft, Google, HTC, to name just a few) toward cooperation and pre-trial settlement as opposed to lawsuits. If so, it will serve consumers better, although lawyers may find they get paid a bit less (somehow I think they will find a way to continue to survive).]]>

Battle of the Betas: Windows 8 vs. OS X Mountain Lionhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows8/battle-betas-windows-8-os-mountain-lion-143127#commentsAnchorThu, 24 May 2012 07:07:08 GMT
As a Lion user (and I do feel that's the right term), I've not had a particularly good experience with the device convergence strategy. Little devices that aren't windowed/mouse/keyboard systems are very different to those which are. Lion's horrible when used with multiple or large monitors; for exactly the same reason that Windows 8 is a miserable experience; you don't need huge start screens nor do you want full-screen to mean windowless operation (e.g. one app only). For a "power user" it's awful and seriously impedes one's workflow. There's a long way to go before these interface issues are resolved. I'm really hoping that Mountain Lion will be an improvement over Lion. I've a horrid feeling that I'm going to be very disappointed. To reiterate how poor Lion can be, I've come to the conclusion that Windows (pre version 8!) is far better in the way it handles full screen operation and multiple applications. But then again Snow Leopard was much better. I so hope Microsoft don't get carried away with "Everything Metro is Good". 'Cos it's not!]]>

So, to flog 500,000,000 copies of windows is a pretty tall order given that there's now some real competition in the consumer space -- which developed whilst Ballmer was asleep at the wheel. No one should be surprised. The iPad is the first device that has threatened Microsoft in both the consumer space and in the enterprise - not so much in the hands of technology works as it has been in the hands of corporate executirves. Decision-makers who push whatever is "shiny snd new" with little consideration for overall value. Consumers are used to paying $500 for a laptop computer but if they can get an iPad for the same $500 - and if the iPad will meet al of their computing needs, they will lean toward the "shiny new" iPad. Microsoft's repsonse with Windows RT (tablet) for the consumer and Windows 8 (tablet and desktop) for the technology worker offers the would-be iPad buyer a Windows-based alternative which is fully compatible with Windows 7. That "compatibility gap" between the iPad and Windows 7 is the iPad's Achilles Heel - a gap that will never be fully bridged. Apple is trying to respond by dumbing-down MacOSX to be more "iOS-like" for consumers but it completely leaves out the enterprise - and it drives away what few enterprise customers that Apple still has. Microsoft, on the other hand, is dependent upon the enterprise and cannot afford for its OEMs to fall because of dismal consumer sales of Windows laptops. Microsoft has no choice but to address this consumer gap. Whether they will be as successful in 2013 as Ballmer hopes, they WILL HAVE TO BE successful in the long run.]]>

@tayme, I have no idea how many Macs are sold just to run Windows. AFAIK, there are no statistics on this, so anything would be pure speculation. I don't buy Macs to be "cool"; I buy them because I think it is the best computer for my needs. I buy an iPhone because I think it's the best device for what I need. We'll certainly see. I'm curious to see what the uptake will be. The initial buzz has certainly chilled to a lukewarm level, but there's still a good amount of excitement around Windows 8. That said, I think the success of Windows 8 RT boils down to one thing - will Apple release a version if iTunes for Windows tablets. One of the biggest hurdles anyone has in moving to a new environment is transferring apps and data. With a tablet, which are great media consumers, the biggest challenge is data. iTunes has the largest video library, which is a huge part in what makes the iPad the compelling device it is. If I'm not locked into using that device to view my iTunes videos, then it makes it that much easier for me to leave behind the iPad I have for a Windows tablet. We'll see.]]>

I think I hear you saying that we finally have the synergistic and complete set of elements that allow us to 'reconverge' the PC in many of its forms with the portable device in many of its forms. We've had tablet PC's for quite a long time. Touch screens were old news - at least to IT folk. The always on paradigm such that I don't need to wait for a boot of my laptop is what made me fond of my tablet. Like many, I got used to leaving my laptop in hibernate and seldom booting. Doesn't work quite as well though as the tablet/OS combination that leverages that behavior. At any rate, low voltage cores, better batteries, OS's that are much better at booting and staying booted despite a changing physical environment, affordable SSD's,AMOLED screens so much better than we had - it seems like it can finally come together.]]>

"But PC sales are also growing, contrary to the conventional wisdom. After growing about 2 percent in 2012, the PC market is expected to grow another 5 percent this year, Gartner says." In those figures, Macs are counted as "PCs", so, once we take out the Mac marketshare (which, while small, is growing), ---Windows--- PC sales are flat or down. This kind of sucks. Previously, an LOB developer could pick up Lightswitch for a very low cost ($299). Now it seems that they'll have to pay almost double for Visual Studio Pro to upgrade to the new version. This is something that I don't like about the re-envisioned Microsoft: they are pricing SMB solutions out of the market. From the non-existant marketing of Smal Business Accounting (and resulting fallout for partner resellers after the program cancellation), to Small Business Server Standard (used to be about $600, now doubled), to private cloud solutions that don't fit into the SMB budget, to the new Small Business Competency fee hike and elimination of the Small Business Specialist Community, and now this. That is incorrect, there won't be Express editions for C#, Visual Basic or C++. There will only be three free Express editions: Windows 8, Web and Phone. It would seem to me that there needs to be a "first to market" allowance for any company considered to be abusing their dominance. That is, Microsoft had Windows out and doing a number of forward thinking things and it took others a while to catch up (aided by the EU and eventual US lawsuits). The same should be considered for Google (and possibly Facebook and Apple may require some review also), but someone who is "first to market" and advance a particular technology will always have something of an advantage. The legth of time that the Microsoft lawsuits drug out allowed Microsoft to be able to have some time to work toward a resolution (even before all lawsuits were settled). Giving Google some time to forumulate alternative plans (and EU advising Facebook and Apple that the same may be coming for them) to me seems like the right thing to do. Hopefully this is the beginning of a trend with respect to Monopoly protection as well as Patent lawsuits that all will realize that it is better to try and settle arguments that to go to court !]]>

Windows Phone share "surging"? Perhaps on Planett Thurrott, but in this universe: "Microsoft's smartphone market share tumbles 27%. Will Windows Phone ever gain traction?" http://blogs.computerworld.com/20184/microsofts_smartphone_market_share_tumbles_27_will_windows_phone_ever_get_traction "More bad news for Microsoft: Gartner research shows that its smartphone sales have tumbled by 27% compared to a year ago, and Microsoft now only has 1.9% market share. At this rate, it's not clear if Windows Phone will ever gain traction." And these numbers are from Gartner, not some unknown source that Paul finds convenient at the moment because it says what he wants to here. If some unknown source says there's been a recent small fluctuation that reverses 1/4th of that previous decline, well first (1) it needs confirmation from another source, (2) is it a trend or a fluctuation (like all of Paul's breathless announcements of the "turnaround" in the decline of IE, which always turn out to be nothing but blips.). And if you want to cherry-pick numbers, iOS went from 30% marketshare to 42% in the US, but that'll never be reported here. Some much for Paul's contention that earlier increases were an iPhone 4S blip. All in all, it's a pretty desperate attempt to find something good to say about a doomed platform. It's already about as relevant as that thing they called a "Zune". On another topic here, I love Paul's suggestion to buy a PC and then pay Microsoft $99 to remove the crapware so that runs right. Just says it all.... ]]>

In Paul's world of financial acumen it's much better to double your market share from 2% to 4% and burn tons of cash doing so than to increase your market share a few percentage points while taking in the lion's share of the profit. Microsoft has proven that it can't compete in markets where it's desktop market share carries little influence. With the lack of growth in the consumer desktop space I think we can finally put a fork in the Microsoft business plan of showing up late to the party and winning from behind. ]]>

@R & Meh - MS leads in the datacenter and enterprise area by quite a margin. Another person commented on an earlier article that the comments are quiet when it comes to Microsoft related articles. My opinion is that the reason for that is because we approach new product announcements in a more analytical manner. We are used to upgrades and do not go "ga-ga" over them like so many fans of consumer electronic devices do. If that is what the consumerization of IT is going to bring, then I am glad that I am approaching retirement. I keep thinking of the movie "Idiocracy". ]]>

It is misleading to quote market share percentages for a few countries then compare that to a lower world wide market share to claim growth. I am sure WP7 market share is climbing, and deservedly so, but at least be consistent with your figures. Compare country to country or world wide to world wide. Mixing and matching does not work. ]]>

It seems to me that MS is pushing users to PRO with this release. $15 for pro is a good value based on previous MS releases. With 7, you could upgrade your new computer for a couple of months for free, but I believe that was only Home Premium. If you wanted Pro, you would have to pay an extra $70-100 dollars. Perhaps MS is stripping all the extras out of Windows 8 to lower the cost and be more competitive with Apple's upgrades. Also, form factors are changing. Does it makes sense to include DVD playback and WMC in Ultrabooks and Tablets? Who is going to leave these devices running all the time. Why would you need DVD playback when there is no DVD? My theory is WinRT is of ARM, Win 8 is for Intel Tablets/Ultrabooks and Pro is for everything else.]]>

@McGilli: You're right, but for the wrong reason. It's not the topic that matters, but rather the tone. When Paul writes about Apple products, it's always with an aggressive tone. He'll attack Apple, trolls, owners of Apple products, etc. This always elicits a response. When Paul writes about Microsoft products, it's generally more positive or, sometimes, neutral. There just isn't as much to say in response to that. It's the same reason that Bill O'Reilly or Rachel Maddow (here in the US) have such high viewership. People respond to that. If Paul would have added a line like, "Even though Bing's marketshare continues to suffer, it's still 3x higher than the marketshare of Mac OS", people would have responded. To the topic of this article, Paul's right. Bing is what it is - a second tier search engine. Only once have I ever had a more successful search on Bing than I have Google. The Facebook integration is interesting, but it's a novelty at best and doesn't match my usage patterns. I commend Microsoft for at least trying something new, but at the end of the day it's not going anywhere and isn't going to raise Bing's marketshare one bit.]]>

Me thinkst there is A LOT of history being re-written in these comments. I believe Windows had a Smartphone (albeit not as Smart as iPhone) before Apple did. And I don't believe Office 365 pre-dates Google Docs. Bing and the main screen of Bing where basically just fancied up Google main search page (with News, Maps, etc...) for a signficant portion of time. Some things that are pointed out are true. Finally with respect to the author's "800 Pound Gorilla" comment, we will have to see if his next article discussing Open Office and MS Office calls MS Office the "800 Pound Gorilla" in the room. My overall point here is that each of these companies are an 800 Pound Gorilla (or something to that effect) in one or more categories and they have all lead in some areas and trailed in others. Personally, I like the competition and think it is good for consumers. ]]>

Windows RT won't be a replacement for the "fat client" desktop; it'll be a low-end mass OS aimed at the mass of users who don't need a "fat client" desktop. Auntie Mable for example. Or kids. This is the great success of iOS; it's proved that you simply don't need all the cruft and complexity of the "fat client" desktop (by which I mean OSX, Linux and Windows). The mass unwashed proles who use computers just don't care about the subtleties; so why make it so infuriatingly complex? RT may well be Microsoft's savior. But only if they resist the temptation to complicate things. Windows (and OSX, Linux) are well past their sell-by date for most people. Great for geeks and power users, way to complex for Joe Public.]]>

The CEO had a management degree that qualified him for his responsibilities, and had studied (minored?) in computer courses but did not get a degree in that field. It was wrong to give the impression that he had a degree in another field of study, and stupid of Yahoo and a prior employer to not have known that. Sloppy vetting on both sides. If the board wasn't dysfunctional itself he wouldn't have been fired. Board members had done similar things to benefit themselves. The work he did probably justified his salary, and he did not get a bonus or golden parachute payment when he left.
