Use ADSI Edit to Associate File Extensionshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/deployment/use-adsi-edit-to-associate-file-extensions#commentsAnchorWed, 29 Apr 2009 15:37:03 GMT
I checked with Apostolos Fotakelis about your experience in not being able to use ADSI Edit to associate the .pdf file extension. He noted that not all applications are built with GPO deployment in mind, as is the case with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Although the procedure he presents can help in some cases, it doesn’t work in every instance. However, he mentioned that Adobe provides a way to deploy the reader in the enterprise. See http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/deploying_reader9.pdf and http://www.appdeploy.com/packages/detail.asp?id=915 Apostolos hasn’t tested this solution, but he says that it looks like it supports GPO-based deployment. Hope that helps! Karen Bemowski, senior editor, Windows IT Pro]]>

Redirect More Foldershttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/registry2/redirect-more-folders#commentsAnchorTue, 03 Feb 2009 16:51:46 GMT
I think Desktop, Document, and Favorites are worth redirected to the server; the rest -- Application Data, SendTo, Cookies and Recent Files -- are not necessary to be stored on the server. This restriction is removed in Windows Server 2008, which allows redirects Application Data, Desktop, Start Menu, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Favorites, Constacts, Downloads, Links, Searches and Saved Games. Redirecting Desktop to a server share causes a slowness to a user if the user stores lots of files and folders on the desktop. However, it’s the case if a GIG network is implemented.]]>

Reparse Points Solve Path Problemshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/migration/reparse-points-solve-path-problems#commentsAnchorWed, 21 Jan 2009 10:54:07 GMT
I contacted Apostolos Fotakelis about your concern. He commented: “The reader is correct. As I mention in the article, it’s important to understand that your files don’t replicate. The Junction program just creates a pointer, so every change you make to either folder is reflected in the other folder as well.” Thanks for reading Windows IT Pro! Use Netsh to Easily Change IP Addresseshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows-shell-bat-and-cmd/use-netsh-to-easily-change-ip-addresses#commentsAnchorSat, 10 Nov 2007 11:07:05 GMT
I can appreciate the usefulness in your non DHCP environment. Could you come up with a similar solution which would attribute a different IP than the current dynamically associated IP address. We have an application which blocks by IP address after 3 incorrect logons, and getting the machine unblocked is a tiring and time-consuming event. For quickness, I usually either manually reset the IP into the non-DHCP range, or use the IPCONFIG /RELEASE command, attribute the ’bad’ IP to another machine, then use IPCONFIG /RENEW. Being able to do this using NETSH would be very nice, if possible.]]>

This article has two large errors with it. The syntax for the "for in do" is wrong, it all needs to be on one line, NOT 2 as shown, or else you receive a syntax error message. This tip would have been more useful if the command lines you show weren’t so screwed up. The %systemroot% variable is not terminated with a back slash so you should have shown a backslash between the variable and the AppPatch subfolder. But worse is the instruction to enter the command at a command prompt instead of in Start/Run.. The only saving grace was the URL to the Microsoft support document that had all the details right.]]>
