I’ve seen many posts all over the net asking "how do I do a crosstab query using SQL Server?". I’ve needed to do this myself recently, so I made a stored procedure that takes a standard query (and a few other parameters) and turns it into a crosstab. Here it is - I hope you find it useful: create procedure sp_XTabQuery @strSQL varchar(8000), @ColumnHeading varchar(1000), @Value varchar(1000), @RowHeading varchar(1000), @SortField varchar(1000), @ValueOperator varchar(1000) as declare @FieldName varchar(1000), @FieldValue varchar(8000),@RowHeadingValue varchar(1000),@OrderByValue varchar(1000), @XTSQL varchar(8000) set @XTSQL = ’select ’ + @RowHeading + ’, ’ exec(’declare mycursor cursor for select distinct ’ + @ColumnHeading + ’, ’ + @SortField + ’ from (’ + @strSQL + ’) x order by ’ + @SortField) open mycursor fetch next from mycursor into @FieldName, @OrderByValue While @@fetch_status = 0 begin if @XTSQL <> ’select ’ + @RowHeading + ’, ’ set @XTSQL = @XTSQL + ’,’ set @XTSQL = @XTSQL + ’[’ + @FieldName + ’] = ’ + @ValueOperator + ’(case when ’ + @ColumnHeading + ’ = ’’’ + @FieldName + ’’’ then ’ + @Value + ’ else ’’’’ end) ’ fetch next from mycursor into @FieldName, @OrderByValue end set @XTSQL = @XTSQL + ’ from (’ + @strSQL + ’) a’ set @XTSQL = @XTSQL + ’ group by ’ + @RowHeading exec(@XTSQL) close mycursor deallocate mycursor]]>

I don’t know if this is the place but here goes. We are expericning severs crashes on our application servers on only Wednesdays. this happens when SQL performs a database dump. The MPI dump is ok but the application database which runs in size from 500mb to over a gig will start but lock up in the beigning of the dump. We have these dumps perform six times a day seven days aweek. but it only happens on Wednesday at noon. Not on every server and not the same one every week. There are nine servers that this application is running on. Kind of a moving target. we have almost ruled out a hardware error or operating system error. We are running NT 4.0 with SP6a, on Compaq proliant 6500 with 1 gig or ram, with two 450 proccessors. and SQL 6.0 SP3 the application will not run on the newer SQL packages with out redoing the code. I have been working with relational databases since 1987, and been a reader of and subscriber to Win NT magazine for several years, but I have to say that I find this to be some of the worst advice I have ever seen. To begin with, you are advising someone who is, apparently, fairly new to the world of the RDBMS, to do something that flies directly in the face of the basics of relational theory and principle. One of the major tenets of normalisation of data when designing a database system is to ensure that each field contains one piece of data, and only one piece of data ! The answer here should be that _both_ pieces of data should be stored, and that the designer should ignore any users who say things like "we’ll never need to know how long we took to fulfill orders" !! There should be two columns used - DateOrderPlaces and DateOrderFulfilled. Of course, reading the question carefully, I can see that it is almost certainly a "made-up" one, because beginners at database design would hardly be sure about wanting to use the Repository for things like this ! I feel sure that, given a little time, you could have come up with a far better example of a _good_ use of the extended properties of an SQL_VARIANT type. However, all-in-all, this really looks like an extension that MS have added because they could, rather than because there’s any good reason for it. Perhaps they would be better employed in bringing their system up to full SQL3 compliance and then bragging about _that_ ? ]]>

In SQL Server Savvy: "Questions, Answers, and Tips About SQL Server" (November 1999), Karen Watterson and Brian Moran describe how to send large email messages as attachments using the xp_sendmail extended stored procedure. Microsoft has confirmed that a bug exists in this process in Microsoft SQL Server 6.5. The xp_sendmail extended stored procedure uses memory, but it doesn’t release that memory when it works with attachments. Eventually, SQL Mail stops responding. You must stop and restart the MSSQL service to get things running again. Microsoft is working on a hotfix. --Ted Metzler]]>

Dear Ms. Watterson:

I just saw your April 1999 Features article, "Beeline to the Repository Honey Pot" and noticed one error which managed to slip through your Editors.

Figure 1 listed for Legacy Systems, "DB2, MVS, Visual Storage Access Method and CICS/IMS." I would have listed them as, "MVS, DB2, IMS, CICS and VSAM. Most mainframe legacy people would not know what the acronym VSAM meant, and especially would not know the "V" was for Virtual and not Visual.

I spent many years as a mainframe, operating system, techie, which means my brain is cluttered up with useless and arcane information such as the meanings of dumb and stupid acronyms. Feel free to ask me any mainframe questions.

I have made the switch as it is getting very difficult finding consulting work as a mainframe techie; and PCs are a lot more fun. ]]>

I read Karen Watterson’s September article, “Oracle for NT,” which was very well written. I must disagree, however, about Cary Millsap’s OFA standard. The article states that OFA came about in 1995, which I believe is incorrect. At the 1991 International Oracle User Week, Millsap presented a paper that detailed the use of OFA with Oracle 6. Also, since 1993, Oracle’s UNIX Performance Tuning Guides have included a section on implementing OFA in a UNIX environment. Is there some place on the Web where I can get an electronic copy of the article?

I noticed Karen Watterson’s December 1996 article, “Exploring Oracle7 Server for Windows NT,” on Oracle’s NT Web page. I’m wondering if Watterson has any knowledge of memory leaks associated with using NT and Oracle 7.3.2.2?
--Mark Mueller

Mark, I asked Milton Wan, Oracle’s Group Product Manager for Windows NT Server, about this problem, and he confirmed that “there are no memory leaks in 7.3.2.2, and there aren’t any in 7.3.2.3. I think there were some small leaks in the original SQLNet 2.3.2, but these are fixed now.” According to Wan, if you’re experiencing this problem, you need to call Oracle’s support organization so they can analyze your situation.

We have Oracle7.3.2.2 and need to upgrade for a new application we’re developing. If I’ve read your December 1996 article correctly, we need to get a different Oracle 7.3.2.2 because we plan to go to NT 4.0 at the same time. Is this interpretation true? Thanks for your help.

We have approximately 500 users enterprisewide and about 300 local users. I’m interested in NT 4.0, but I don’t know anyone using it. Database size is currently about 2GB. How do we distribute data and indexes and control file access across multiple drives? Do we need RAID 5 or mirror disk? A combination? What is the most efficient server configuration? I’d appreciate any information and technical resources you can suggest.

The short answer is to use a combination of RAID 5 and mirrored disks. Set up data and indexes (in different tablespaces) on the RAID drives; put the control files, redo logs, archive logs, system tablespace, and tempspace on mirrored drives. Use as many disk controllers as you can, and distribute the drives to the controllers so that they don’t become a bottleneck. Lots of small drives are usually preferable to a few big drives.

Questions, Answers, and Tips About SQL Serverhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/security/questions-answers-and-tips-about-sql-server493#commentsAnchorTue, 10 Aug 1999 13:13:32 GMT
In the November 1997 SQL Server Q&A, a reader asked about Visual SourceSafe (VSS) and SQL Server. True, nothing exists to manage T-SQL code with VSS. But Embarcadero develops TeamSQL/Project, which can do the same thing (with or without PVSC). I’m a beta tester of Embarcadero’s software, and this version is only the first. Their development team is working on a more complete future release of TeamSQL/Project (and I hope it will include SourceSafe support). Check it out at http://www.embarcadero.com.

TeamSQL/Project ships with the MKS SourceIntegrity version control engine but also supports InterSolve PVCS. Team SQL/Project supports several databases (Oracle, Sybase, Informix, SQL Anywhere, DB2, InterBase, and SQLBase) besides SQL Server.

Oracle for NThttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/oracle/oracle-for-nt#commentsAnchorTue, 10 Aug 1999 10:41:46 GMT
I’m an avid reader and fan of your magazine. The technical content is both challenging and useful. As a long-time Oracle database administrator (DBA), I want to comment on Karen Watterson’s September 1997 article, “Oracle for NT.” I give the author high marks for including lots of valuable tips in a very readable format. However, I must give a grade of B on the answer about SNAPSHOT TOO OLD messages. When delete and update transactions occur, the data blocks get the new data, and the rollback segments get a copy of the original data blocks. This snapshot is of the original data—the source of that unfortunate term in the error message. An original data block cannot be overwritten in a rollback segment as long as it is active, (i.e., until you have a commit or rollback of the delete or update that sent the data block to the rollback segment). After that, the data block sits unprotected in the rollback segment until it is overwritten. Oracle uses rollback segment space in a round-robin fashion to avoid overwriting original blocks as long as possible. The snapshot data that is no longer active is still important to any queries that began before the transaction started and have not finished by the time the transaction is committed. A fundamental database management system (DBMS) rule dictates that such a query must return data the way it existed when the query started. To accomplish this feat (using a mechanism called System Change Numbers—SCN), a query checks each data block it wants to read to see whether that data block was changed after the query started. If so, the query knows to look in the rollback segments for that data block. If the query cannot find the needed data block with an appropriate SCN in the rollback segments, voila! The SNAPSHOT TOO OLD error message occurs. I question the article’s first bulleted advice on how to avoid this problem. More rollback segment space is needed, but it should probably be allocated in more rollback segments rather than increased segment size. Also, the extent size in rollback segments is a tricky issue. The optimal setting depends on the characteristics of the database in question. In my experience, Oracle does best with rollback segments composed of a lot of fairly small extents. I recommend more in-depth reading on the subject before you make changes in this area.

Your points are well taken, Roger. Thanks for reminding me of the dangers of simplistic generalization. Oracle’s rollback segments do merit database-specific optimization.

Beeline to the Repository Honey Pothttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/windows-client/beeline-to-the-repository-honey-pot#commentsAnchorMon, 09 Aug 1999 10:43:23 GMT
I enjoyed Karen Watterson’s “Beeline to the Repository Honey Pot” (April). I attended the Austin Professional Developers Summit (PDS) session about using COM to access the Microsoft Repository. I left the session thinking that the time was right to test-drive the various Repository tools. My experience with using Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Repository to integrate Microsoft Visual Modeler 2.0, Rational Software’s Rational Rose 98i, Microsoft Visual Studio’s (VS’s) Visual Component Manager, Microsoft Visual Basic (VB) 6.0, and Visio Enterprise 5.0 via Repository 2.0 has been a veritable Catch 22 of incompatibilities, unrecoverable application errors (UAEs) and other varied moments of joy. Eventually, I hope Microsoft can force a standard on the tool vendors, but so far, Microsoft hasn’t been able to get its repository-tools act together. For the time being, I’ve stopped trying to integrate off-the-shelf tools via the Repository because trying to use the tools decreases productivity. Most of the tool vendors lack Repository support for some key parts of the UML standard, including stereotypes and tagged values and simplistic Repository import/export functionality. At this point in time, I’d apply the author’s phrase “grandiose and unsuccessful” to the UML tool vendors’ support of the Repository.
--Steve Dadoly

Unfortunately, I think your experiences are fairly typical. Repositories have never sold, and the interest in them continues to be anemic. As of April 25, 1999, only 236 messages (from five or so active individuals) resided in microsoft.public.repository vs. hundreds of messages in almost every microsoft.public.sqlserver newsgroup. The number of repository-related messages might be a crude measure, but that response number combined with the few TechEd ’99 sessions (two or three vs. one last year) that reportedly will be devoted to Repository seem to indicate a lack of interest in repositories within the industry. And now, with Computer Associates’ takeover of PLATINUM Technology (including ERwin), I wonder about the future of Microsoft’s cross-platform initiatives for Repository. On a more positive note, I think Visio 2000 will offer even better Repository support than Visio 5.0 does, and Visio 2000 might start eating into ERwin’s market share for a database modeling tool.
