Lost Passwordshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/passwords/lost-passwords#commentsAnchorThu, 27 Oct 2011 23:45:54 GMT
If you lost your windows log on password, you can try these methods: Method 1: Log on as admin to reset the password. When installing Windows, it automatically creates an account Administrator and the default password is blank. If you have previously created a password reset disk, you can use it to reset the password also. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305 for more info. Method 2: You can try free software such as Ophcrack,Offline NT Password & Registry Editor,PC Login Now and Kon-Boot. More details here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htm Method 3: Use 3rd party password recovery tool (eg. Windows Password Rescuer and Windows password tools) to reset your windows password. See help page at http://www.daossoft.com/documents/how-to-reset-window-2000xp-vista-win7-password.html]]>

I recommend downloading NetWrix Account Lockout Examiner for such account lockouts. Rather than relying on 3 different tools, the NetWrix tools resolves AD lockouts in one complete solution that alerts administrators of all lockouts in real time, investigates the root causes of the lockouts, such as, mapped network drives, for example, and allows end users to resolve these lockouts on their own via a web-based console. The NetWrix tool is the simple solution to a complex and common problem, allowing users to solve lockouts on their own without much, if any, intervention from the help desk.]]>

I wish I’d found this earlier! I’ve been struggling with this problem myself (and have implemented it much less efficiently).

However, I did find an algorithm for calculating Easter for a given year, which might help some folks:

http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/astronomical-applications/astronomical-information-center/date-easter

It’s not as elegant as your code for the other holidays-- you’d have to iterate through every year-- but at least it’s a programattic way to do it.]]>

How to Stop Users From Installing Google Chromehttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/installation2/how-to-stop-users-from-installing-google-chrome#commentsAnchorTue, 21 Dec 2010 19:23:20 GMT
Perhaps Google has updated their installation steps as I also followed the directions exactly and Google Chrome did install, however, the user was not able to launch Chrome.

I looked further into this and have found chrome_installer.exe is also being used during the install process...at least when starting the install from http://www.google.com/chrome.

So for XP I added another New Path Rule:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update\Download\*\chrome_installer.exe

Now after going through all the steps starting from http://www.google.com/chrome The Google Chrome Installer application displays the message ’The installer failed to start’ which accomplishes the mission for my XP systems.]]>

Prevent Multiple Logons With GPOshttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/tips/prevent-multiple-logons-with-gpos#commentsAnchorThu, 23 Sep 2010 02:09:49 GMT
Logon scripts-based solutions like the one described in this article present too many drawbacks and weaknesses to suit large IT infrastructures’ security requirements:

- if a workstation is not connected to the network, scripts cannot run and sessions history is therefore lost
- a logon script runs as a user, and an ill-disposed user can therefore kill the script
- if an untimely reboot occurs, sessions are not suppressed from the database
- ...

More, there’s an app for that: UserLock (http://www.UserLock.com).]]>

Emm.. you may remember the wrong password or someone hack your computer and change the password.
Whatever it is, you need to get access to you windows 7 now. You can make a Windows password reset disk to reset your password:

1. Login to a computer that can link to Internet. Download windows Password recovery and install it on that PC. Note that: there is a .ISO file. Burn the .ISO file to a CD or a USB flash drive.

2. Get out the newly created CD/USB and insert it to the locked computer.

3. re-booted the locked computer (it’s necessary for you to change your computer’s Setup to make it boot from CD drive or USB drive) and then followed the process of instructions. Just a few steps, the old password was removed.

4. Setting new password.

won’t do any harm to your data, only remove windows password

So, is it easy? Luck!

This script is no good for general housekeeping, as it assumes that only one file is created each day. It will be OK for anyone who is doing the exact same thing as the author, and deleting log files that are generated daily, but it will not serve anyone looking for a way to clean up zillions of folders on any given drive.

You’ll have to use with move clause, use only backup proc, and then restore dbs one by one with restore TSQL statement. Copy Group Membership from User to Userhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/task-scheduling/copy-group-membership-from-user-to-user#commentsAnchorTue, 27 Jan 2009 11:14:55 GMT
The code might not be working for you because the code in Listing 1 was wrapped to multiple lines. Unlike most Windows shell scripting commands, wrapping For commands can cause them to fail, especially when you’re using the /F switch to parse a file’s contents. I hunted down the original CopyUsersGroups.bat script, in which no lines are wrapped. I placed this script in the 94471.zip file. In addition, I placed the original sample .ini file (utils.ini) that you can adapt and use. You can obtain CopyUsersGroups.bat and utils.ini by clicking the "Download the Code Here" button at the top of the page. If you find that the original CopyUsersGroups.bat script doesn’t work for you, check to see if your .ini file’s path (i.e., the path you set to the cfgfile variable in the script) includes spaces. One limitation of using the For command to parse files is that spaces in a file’s path will cause the For command to fail. If your .ini file’s path includes spaces, see the article "Two Tricks for Your Scripting Toolbelt" (enter 38418 in the InstantDoc ID box or go to http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/38418/38418.html) for information on how to handle those spaces. (The typical technique of enclosing the file path in double quotes doesn’t work in this situation.) "Two Tricks for Your Scripting Toolbelt" was originally accessible only to VIP members, but I now opened this article up for public viewing in case you need to read it. If you’re still having problems with the script after trying the original script and handling any spaces, please let me know. Karen Bemowski, senior editor, Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine]]>

in case of sql server 2005 and 2008 "sys.sql_modules" category view is more useful than "syscomments" system table. in addition [syscomments].[text] column size is too small to store the source code of big(?) Very useful < had the exact same problem; appied the method described here and the method worked perfectly. I did not have to go in and set policy for individual .mdb files. Once I "enabled" the ploicy without any extensions in the field, I rebooted and Voila! SyncCity]]>

An Alternative to Windows Vistahttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/tips/an-alternative-to-windows-vista#commentsAnchorThu, 17 Apr 2008 03:06:17 GMT
When I first started reading this article in the mag I thought ’Great, an alternative to Vista, about bloody time’, but then I saw the articles author, and I became sadly depressed again! If ANY Microsoft people read the article, then please, please, take up the idea! Windows XP Classic would be so much better than Vista. Personally we’re waiting for Windows 7, so we can migrate straight from XP to that and by pass Vista altogether. To the editors of WindowsITPro, if you’re going to run April fools, please make the article smaller, or more humourious so that its an obvious joke. I think too many people will take this as a legit article, and get their hopes up, as no one really notices/bothers to read the article authors!]]>

I am not a fan of April Fool’s Day in any way shape or form. I get particularly aggravated when I spend my valuable time reading an article only to find that it was an April Fool’s joke. Worse still is that some people don’t read far enough to determine that it is a joke. They simply go away thinking the misinformation is true. Please do not include such "jokes" in the future. They are not funny.]]>

Most people should remember that XP had the same reception as Vista. Like many people, I hated XP when it came out. Now I can’t stand working on someone’s 95 or 98 box, although W2K is still OK with me. One thing’s clear, if your brand new "loaded" pc/laptop runs like crap because of Vista, somthin ain’t right. Thanks to Dell, we still have an OS option.]]>

An Alternative to Windows Vistahttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/tips/an-alternative-to-windows-vista#commentsAnchorThu, 27 Mar 2008 09:57:18 GMT
This is great news!!! Microsoft needs to follow the same suite with Server 2008 as well. That is one of the biggest boxes of crap since Vista. M$ should make XP and 2003 work properly instead of forcing new crap down our throats. It costs industry untold mega-dollars each time M$ releases new stuff. In fact, most companies haven’t recovered form the XP and 2003 upgrades. Then to force Vista and 2008 down our throats very shortly after - as well as Exchange 2007 (another box of crap) is just bad for business and the economy. Then again, M$ has more money than the economy so how would they know anyway. I say just fix the good stuff and we can all get on with making money for “our” stock holders and not just make more money for M$ stock holders. But what do I know. I’ve only been dealing with this stuff since the early 90’s and make my living form it now.]]>

Display Dates in the Format You Needhttp://www.sqlmag.com/article/tsql3/display-dates-in-the-format-you-need#commentsAnchorTue, 04 Mar 2008 11:26:28 GMT
I contacted the author, Roy Byrd, about your question. He noted that, "The problem is the format parameter ’hh:mm:ss’ uses the ’mm’ instead of the ’nn’ for the minutes value. The ’mm’ in the format paramter is for months. The correct format is ’hh:nn:ss’ if minutes are desired. The following script declare @Datefield datetime set @Datefield=’10/9/2007 2:27:45’ select dbo.FormatDate(@Datefield,’hh:mm:ss’) returns 02:10:45 showing the value of the month is 10 in the ’mm’ position. If the format is changed to use ’nn’ in the minutes position, 02:27:45 is returned. The T-Sql statement SELECT CONVERT(varchar(10), @DateField, 108) returns 02:27:45." I hope that answers your question. If not, please let me know. Karen Bemowski Senior editor SQL Server Magazine, Windows IT Pro, Scripting Pro VIP]]>

Possible time conversion issues: I have a date source value of Datefield = ’10/9/2007 2:27:45’ Using formatdate(DateField, ’hh:mm:ss’) returns 14:10:45. Using SQL onversion CONVERT(varchar(10), DateField, 108) returns 14:27:45 Can you confirm the results?]]>

OptimalSolutions, thank you for pointing out the problems with the listing links--although I’m sorry that the problem occurred. I totally understand your frustration. Readers have been reporting multiple similar problems over the past couple months. If it only were a matter of QA checking on our side, the problem wouldn’t exist. However, the problem stems from several technical issues out of the editors’ control, related to our Web hosting and production processes. This isn’t to make excuses, rather to say that we editors are as frustrated as you are about it. I will report it ASAP to our Web team and will do what I can to keep the issue from happening again!
