Solution to August's Puzzle: Find the Pattern
Given the following sequence of integers, can you identify the pattern in the sequence and how it should continue: 3, 3, 5, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5, 4, 3, 6, 6, 8, 8? Each value ( Vn ) in the sequence represents the number of letters in the English name of the corresponding numeral, beginning with the number one (without spaces and hyphens): one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and so on. Here's the first part of the sequence with a few additional numbers: 3, 3, 5, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5, 4, 3, 6, 6, 8, 8, 7, 7, 9, 8, 8, 6, 9, 9, 11, 10, 10, 9, 11, 11, 10… Thanks again to Erik Veerman of Solid Quality Learning for this puzzle.

September's Puzzle: Round Manhole Covers
Why are manhole (aka maintenance hole) covers typically round? You might find this a strange topic for a puzzle, but the answer lies purely in logic.

September's Puzzle on Round Manhole covers.

Anyone who has read "How Would You Move Mt. Fuji?: Microsoft's Cult of the Puzzle" by Willaim Poundstone should know that one.

Answer: Because the MANHOLES are round. Who would put a square cover on a round hole? DUH.

Digging further into why the Manholes themselves are round: There is a extending lip running the entire circumference of the oepnning the effectively decreases the diameter of the hole by twice the width of the lip. No matter how you position the cover now, will never be able to drop inside the hole because its diameter is greater then the diameter of the hole. If the hole and cover were both square, for example, the cover could be turned to a vertical plane, rotated 45 degrees, and drop nicely down along a diagonal axis on the square.

I wonder how many manhole workers got klunked on the head before they figured it out?

    [Itzik: right you are :)]
